In the halls of Washington Elementary School, Ashley Kissinger is more than just a familiar face, she is a steadfast source of support, encouragement, and advocacy for students and families alike. As we celebrate Social Work Appreciation Month, we recognize the vital role of school social workers like Ashley, whose dedication makes an immeasurable difference in our district.
Ashley’s journey into social work wasn’t linear. She began her college career as a business major, but a Global Child Welfare and Wellbeing class, along with a Spanish Service Learning course, ignited a passion that led her to pursue a double major in Social Work and Spanish. That decision would shape the course of her professional life, ultimately bringing her to the School District of Lancaster, where she has served for seven years.
Finding a Home in SDoL
Her initial role in social work was as a Supports Coordinator at Behavioral Health & Developmental Services, where she worked closely with SDoL students who had Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). She thrived in that collaborative environment, working alongside teachers, therapists, and caregivers to support students holistically. Knowing she wanted to deepen her impact, Ashley pursued a Master’s in Social Work, completing her internship at Price Elementary before joining Washington Elementary full-time.
From her first days in the district, Ashley knew she had found her professional home. The opportunity to work directly with families and build long-term relationships with students reinforced her decision to become a social worker.
Making a Lasting Impact: A Story of Resilience
One of the most rewarding aspects of Ashley’s role is the opportunity to walk alongside families through their struggles and triumphs. She recalls working with one particular family for seven years, witnessing both hardships and moments of growth. This year, a parent from that family achieved a personal milestone by returning to school to earn a certificate. The parent’s heartfelt message of gratitude, thanking Ashley for her belief and support, was a reminder of the lasting impact that school social workers can have beyond the classroom.
“I love that I not only get to have an impact on students but also their caregivers,” Ashley shares. “The work is hard, but being a social worker is incredibly fulfilling.”
Her role extends far beyond crisis intervention, she is a trusted confidante, an advocate, and a guide for families navigating the challenges of life.
Daily Motivation and Self-Care
Ashley’s motivation comes from the connections she builds every day. Whether through a warm hug, a listening ear, or providing vital resources, she strives to be a consistent presence in her students’ lives. She understands that for many students, school is a safe space, and her role is to ensure they feel supported, seen, and encouraged.
Recognizing the emotional weight of her profession, Ashley prioritizes self-care to maintain her resilience. She finds solace in outdoor adventures, from hiking to kayaking, and stays energized through exercise, reading, and community involvement. A recent trip to Costa Rica served as a much-needed reset, reminding her of the importance of balance in a field that demands so much of one’s heart and energy.
The Importance of Social Work in SDoL
Ashley takes great pride in the evolution of social work within SDoL. The district’s recent decision to formally recognize social workers by title was a significant moment for her. “I have always been incredibly proud to call myself a social worker,” she says. “It’s one of my favorite parts of life and a title I am proud to be called.”
She sees her role as a fierce advocate for students, working to break down systemic barriers, fight injustices, and ensure that families have access to the support they need.
Social Work Appreciation Month is an opportunity to honor professionals like Ashley who pour their hearts into their communities. At SDoL, we are fortunate to have 23 dedicated school social workers who work tirelessly every day. Ashley hopes that the community will continue to recognize the essential role of social workers across various settings, from schools to hospitals to social service agencies.
Uplifting and Empowering Women in Social Work
Beyond her work in SDoL, Ashley is passionate about empowering other women in the profession. She firmly believes in the power of words, using messages of encouragement to uplift colleagues, students, and community members alike.
Her advice to young women considering social work is to find a specialization they are passionate about and build a strong support system. “The work will be hard, and people may try to dissuade you. Find your people. Those who will support, encourage, and believe in you.”
She experiences the power of sisterhood and solidarity among women daily, surrounded by a team of strong, compassionate professionals. Women’s History Month serves as an additional reminder of the remarkable contributions of women in social work and beyond.
A Commitment That Never Wavers
To Ashley, social work is a calling. It is about standing in the gap for students and families, offering them hope, resources, and the belief that they are capable of overcoming obstacles.
This month, we celebrate Ashley and all our social workers who dedicate their lives to this critical work. Thank you, Ashley, for your passion, resilience, and commitment to the students and families of Washington Elementary School. SDoL is better because of you.
