In the School District of Lancaster, we believe that The Arts teach skills that can be taught and learned; it is not just about aptitude or talent. We believe that the arts are an essential part of life, that the arts teach that there are many ways to see and interpret the world, and that student learning is demonstrated though practical application and knowledge utilization through a variety of projects, performances, and presentations.
SDoL has been named one of America's Best Communities for Music Education for a decade, and its musical programs have earned renown across Pennsylvania. The curriculum allows students develop the ability to be life-long musicians and find deep enjoyment in music. Through ensembles and auditioned festivals, students have opportunities to perform locally and around the world.
The visual arts in SDoL emphasize hands-on, experiential learning in which students work at their own pace through the creative process. The curriculum draws connections between art and language and mathematics and offers students numerous opportunities to exhibit their work in professional settings.
SDoL's theater arts programs provide numerous opportunities for students to perform across grade levels. From elementary and middle school plays to McCaskey's extravagant spring musical production, hundreds of students take their turn on the stage annually. Curricular offerings include elective courses in acting, movement and theater analysis.
