Learning doesn’t only happen in classrooms. Sometimes it happens in the moments that prepare students to help someone in need.
Carter and MacRae Elementary students participating in the Pennsylvania Dutch Council, Scouting America ScoutReach program recently had the opportunity to take part in a hands-on first responder learning experience with Lancaster EMS. During the session, students learned how to perform CPR and how to respond to choking emergencies using the Heimlich maneuver. These practical skills gave students a firsthand understanding of how quick thinking and preparation can make a life-saving difference.
Guided by the experienced professionals at Lancaster EMS, students practiced the techniques and asked questions about emergency response and community health.
Through experiences like this, students are not only learning how to respond in an emergency. They are developing leadership and the confidence to care for others in their community.
During Read Across America Week, schools across the School District of Lancaster celebrate the power of reading and the many ways literacy can bring people together.
At Wickersham Elementary School, that celebration extended beyond the classroom walls as families gathered for a recent Literacy Night designed to highlight the joy of reading while encouraging students and families to create stories of their own.
The event welcomed Wickersham families into the school for an evening focused on reading and writing. The goal was to create an interactive experience where literacy could be shared between students and their families while demonstrating how books can inspire creativity and storytelling at home.
A special highlight of the evening was a guest reading from Lancaster Mayor @arroyoforlancaster , who joined students and families to read the children’s book I Like Myself.
Through shared stories, collaborative writing, and a celebration of their school community, Wickersham families experienced firsthand how literacy can strengthen connections and inspire learning that continues far beyond the classroom.
Way to go Wickersham Wildcats! Read the full story on our website.
