Students do not leave their lives at the door. Every day, students arrive at school carrying experiences that shape how they learn, build relationships, and engage with the world around them.
That reality was part of the conversation at the 2026 Domestic Violence Services Conference, “Building a Community of Care”, at the @warecenter where School District of Lancaster Assistant Superintendent Dr. April Hershey joined educators, healthcare professionals, advocates, and community leaders to discuss how institutions can work together to support children and families impacted by trauma.
Schools are often among the first places where signs of abuse and trauma become visible. That’s why building strong relationships with students matters. Trusted adults can help recognize when a student may be struggling and connect them with the support they need.
Supporting children cannot rest with any one institution alone. Creating safe, supportive environments requires all of us working together.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, contact @dvs_lanc 24/7 emergency hotline at (717) 299-1249 or text SAFE to 61222.
