Phoenix Academy’s Monster Mash: building community and confidence

At Phoenix Academy, Halloween is a celebration of creativity, leadership, and belonging. This year, students and staff came together once again for the school’s second annual Halloween Bash, known affectionately as the Monster Mash.

The event transformed the school into a lively hub of color and imagination. Hallways were filled with decorations designed by students, classrooms became activity stations, and the sounds of laughter and music echoed through the building. The goal was to create a safe, positive, and inclusive space where students could enjoy the holiday while practicing respect, responsibility, and teamwork.

The idea for the Monster Mash was born from Mx. Fout’s deep passion for Halloween and community building. “I’ve been a haunted house actor for over 11 years,” they shared. “When I came to Phoenix Academy, I wanted to channel that creative energy into something meaningful for our students. I was one of those at-risk kids once, and I know how much it means to have someone believe in you. This event is about giving our students that same spark, a passion they can carry into other parts of their lives.”

Planning for the Monster Mash began weeks in advance. Students in the Executive Firebirds, Phoenix Academy’s student leadership and management team, took charge of nearly every detail, from designing decorations and coordinating activities to managing setup and cleanup. Their commitment was extraordinary.

“Their dedication is what made this event possible” said the Fout.

The result was a community celebration that reflected the heart of Phoenix Academy. Students painted pumpkins, designed haunted rooms, hosted games, and welcomed families and guests to share in the fun. Every corner of the school reflected the hard work and creativity of its students, who took pride in seeing their ideas come to life.

“The kids worked so hard, and it shows. They’ve learned how to collaborate, communicate, and stay committed to a shared goal. These are the same skills that will carry them far beyond the classroom.”

While the costumes and pumpkins brought the fun, the deeper message of the Monster Mash was one of empowerment and connection. The event reminded students that leadership and creativity can grow when they are given trust and responsibility.

“I want the community to know that Phoenix Academy is filled with bright, artistic, and ambitious students,” Fout said. “They have so much to offer. When we give them love, care, and opportunity, they rise to the occasion. They belong in college, in the workforce, and in every place where their talents can shine.”

For Phoenix Academy, the Monster Mash has become a living example of what happens when students are encouraged to dream big, take ownership, and create something together. Each pumpkin, costume, and laugh told a story of growth, proof that with support and belief, every student can find their place to shine. For more photos, visit us on Facebook.
