Happy Hanukkah! Celebrating the Festival of Lights: Dec. 14-Dec. 22, 2025

Hanukkah invites us to pause during the shortest days of the year and reflect on the enduring power of light. It’s a celebration rooted in perseverance, faith, and the belief that even a small flame, when protected and shared, can illuminate far more than its immediate surroundings. That message resonates deeply within our schools and throughout our city. Across School District of Lancaster, we are proud of the many cultures, traditions, and identities that shape our classrooms. Jewish students, families, and staff are an important part of our community, and honoring their traditions strengthens the sense of belonging that we strive to create for every learner. When traditions are acknowledged and celebrated, students see themselves reflected and respected in the places where they learn and grow.

Stop by Penn Square every day at 5:30 p.m. (or 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 19) to witness the menorah lighting. The final candle in the menorah will be lit on Dec. 21.

Hanukkah also reminds us of the importance of passing values from one generation to the next. The lighting of the menorah is both a remembrance and a promise. It’s a reminder of resilience and a commitment to carry light forward through teaching and community connection. These are values we see every day in our schools, through educators who show up with dedication, families who partner with us, and students who bring curiosity and compassion into shared spaces.

As candles are lit this week, may they bring warmth into homes, spark meaningful conversations, and offer moments of reflection and hope. From all of us at the School District of Lancaster, we wish our Jewish families and neighbors a happy Hanukkah, filled with light, peace, and connection. For more photos, visit us on Facebook.
