Staff shoutout: Gina Ramos, 1st Grade Teacher at Fulton ES

For 25 years, Gina Ramos has dedicated her career to shaping the earliest school experiences of students in the School District of Lancaster. As a first grade teacher at Fulton Elementary School, she spends her days guiding young learners through reading, writing, math, science, and social studies, helping them build the academic and social foundations that will carry them through their educational journey.

Teaching first grade means every day is filled with discovery. Students are learning to read their first books independently, write their first full stories, and solve math problems with growing confidence. For Gina, those milestones never lose their magic.

But for her, the most meaningful moments often happen before the lessons even begin.

Each morning, Gina stands at her classroom door ready to welcome her students as they arrive. Hugs, high fives, fist bumps, and smiles are exchanged as students walk in, setting the tone for a classroom built on connection and trust. Those small moments help students feel seen, supported, and ready to learn.

“My favorite part of my job is greeting my students each morning as they enter the classroom,” Gina shared. “I look forward to the hugs, high fives, fist bumps, and smiles each morning. I love seeing the pride in their faces when they learn something new. It’s very fulfilling to know that I play an important role in their learning.”

Originally from Reading, Pennsylvania, Gina’s path to becoming a teacher was shaped by her own experiences growing up in city schools. She attended Reading High School and remembers the many educators who inspired her along the way. Their encouragement and dedication helped her develop a love for learning that would later influence her own career path.

“I had so many teachers who made me love learning,” she said. “I knew that I could make a difference like they did.”

Her passion for teaching began early. As a child, she often played school at home, teaching lessons to her younger brother. Those early moments of curiosity and care eventually grew into a lifelong commitment to education.

Gina pursued that passion at Millersville University, where she earned a dual degree in early childhood and elementary education in 1999. She later returned to Millersville to earn a master’s degree in early childhood education in 2005. In 2007, she further expanded her expertise by earning her ESL certification through Penn State University, strengthening her ability to support multilingual learners in the classroom.

Millersville’s Urban Education program also played an important role in preparing her for the career she envisioned.

“I loved the suburban environment and scenery at Millersville,” Gina said. “I grew up in the city so it was a different experience for me. But I also loved their education program and the Urban Education program that prepares teachers to work in city schools. I always knew I wanted to teach in the city because of the diversity and opportunities to make a difference.”

That commitment to diversity and community continues to shape her work in the School District of Lancaster today.

“I love the students, families, and staff in the district,” Gina said. “I love how diverse our district is and that we have so many students from all over the world. I love the pride that families, staff, and students have in our community. I’m so proud to be a part of the SDoL family.”

Over the course of her career, Gina has helped hundreds of young learners develop confidence in their abilities. This year alone, she celebrated a notable accomplishment as many of her students demonstrated significant growth in their STAR Reading and math assessments from the beginning of the school year to the most recent testing window in January. Seeing students grow academically and personally is one of the most rewarding parts of her work.

Her dedication extends beyond her own classroom. Colleagues describe Gina as someone who consistently supports others and creates a positive environment for the entire team.

One colleague who nominated her shared, “She goes out of her way to help students and colleagues. Gina shows me that if she can do this rewarding job, so can I. She is an amazing teacher and mentor, and I’m grateful to be part of the first grade team with her.”

After spending years helping students build their earliest academic foundations, Gina recently experienced a moment that reminded her just how lasting that impact can be.

One of her favorite memories came last year when she attended the McCaskey High School graduation ceremony and saw former students she had taught years earlier walk across the stage.

“It was a full-circle moment,” she said. “Seeing them graduate and watching how proud their families were was very touching. It’s something I look forward to seeing again in the future.”

Outside of the classroom, Gina enjoys spending time with her 18-year-old son Ellis, her mom, and their two cats, Tom and Jerry. She also enjoys going to the gym, reading, watching reality TV and sports, and attending concerts whenever she can.

Her family also shares a love for Disney. Each year, they make a trip to Disney World together, continuing a tradition that has become one of their favorite ways to spend time together.

When football and basketball seasons arrive, Gina is also quick to show her team pride as a dedicated Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

After 25 years in the School District of Lancaster, Gina Ramos continues to show that the smallest moments in the classroom can make the biggest difference. From morning greetings to celebrating academic growth, her commitment to students, colleagues, and the community reflects the heart of what makes SDoL special.

And for the students who walk through her classroom door each morning, that welcoming smile is often the first step in a lifelong journey of learning.
