At Lafayette Elementary School, kindness often shows up in the small moments that help people feel seen and appreciated.
Recently, that spirit was on full display thanks to Lafayette social worker Kim Nguyen. In a gesture that surprised and uplifted her colleagues, Kim distributed 100 insulated water bottles to every staff member in the building, turning an ordinary day into a moment of gratitude and encouragement for the entire school community.
The story began earlier this school year during a time of uncertainty for many educators across Pennsylvania. With the state budget still unresolved, school communities were facing difficult questions about resources and funding for the year ahead. Like many districts, the School District of Lancaster was navigating that uncertainty while continuing to support students every day.

Kim noticed the effect that uncertainty was having on morale within the building. As a social worker, she spends much of her day helping students navigate challenges and supporting families. But she also understands how important it is to care for the adults who show up each day for those students.
“At the beginning of the year, staff morale was down,” Kim explained. “The state budget had not passed yet and we were not sure if we were going to have money for things this year. It was just a tough time for a lot of people.”

Around that time, Kim came across an online giveaway from the company BrüMate. The promotion offered the chance to win insulated water bottles. Without thinking too much about it, she decided to enter.
When she found out she had won, she realized the prize included 100 water bottles. Almost immediately, she knew exactly what she wanted to do with them.
“I decided that if I won, I wanted to give them to the staff here,” she said.
The prize shipment meant that every adult working at Lafayette Elementary could receive one. Teachers, support staff, office staff, custodians, paraprofessionals, and other team members were all included. For Kim, it was important that the gesture recognize everyone who contributes to the school community.

In a building where collaboration is essential to helping students succeed, the gifts became a symbol of appreciation for the work happening every day inside Lafayette’s classrooms and hallways.
“We got 100 water bottles so every staff member could have one,” Kim said.
When the water bottles were distributed, the response was immediate. Staff members were surprised not only by the gift itself, but by the thought behind it. In a profession where long hours and emotional energy are often poured into supporting students, small acts of kindness can carry a powerful message.
Kim hopes that message was clear.
“I hope that they see the value in themselves,” she said. “I really appreciate them. They are my people. They come to work every day and work so hard.”

Her words reflect something that many in the Lafayette community already know, schools run on relationships. The connections between educators, counselors, support staff, and administrators create the foundation that allows students to feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.
Moments like this also highlight the role that social workers play in a school community. While much of their work happens quietly behind the scenes supporting students’ social and emotional needs, they are also key leaders in shaping a positive school culture.
By recognizing the dedication of her colleagues, Kim helped create a moment of connection that reminded the entire building that their work matters.

For Kim, Lafayette is more than just a workplace. It’s a community she cares deeply about.
“Lafayette is the best,” she said. “I love being here, and I love being a part of this crew.”
It’s that sense of pride and connection that makes Lafayette Elementary such a special place for students and staff alike. And sometimes, all it takes is one thoughtful gesture to remind people how much they are valued.
