Staff Shoutout: Nikole Hample, ELD at Hamilton ES

At Hamilton Elementary, learning doesn’t begin with a worksheet or a lesson plan. It begins with connection. In classrooms where dozens of languages and lived experiences come together, that connection matters. For Nikole Hample, an English Language Development (ELD) teacher, it’s the foundation of everything she does.

For the past 11 years in the School District of Lancaster, Hample has built her work around a simple but powerful belief. Language is more than communication. It’s about access. It’s identity. It’s belonging.

Her day reflects that belief in motion. She moves between classrooms and learning spaces with purpose, pulling small groups of multilingual learners to provide targeted instruction, then pushing into classrooms to support students in real time. She works closely with autistic support classrooms, ensuring students who are dually identified receive the layered support they need. Her day often extends beyond the traditional schedule through extended learning opportunities, creating additional time and space for students to grow.

Every interaction is intentional. Every moment is an opportunity to build confidence.

“I love celebrating progress with my students,” Hample shared. “And hearing from past students about their success reminds me why this work matters so much.”

That long view of success is something her colleagues notice immediately.

“Nikole is always willing to support her colleagues by sharing the resources she thoughtfully creates for her students,” one colleague shared. “She generously shares these materials with ELD teachers across the district and welcomes new teachers into her classroom, offering guidance and expertise with enthusiasm.”

Her classroom is a hub of collaboration. New teachers are welcomed in, ideas are shared freely, and resources are designed with the understanding that strong systems support strong outcomes for students.

Another colleague described the way she shows up for both students and staff every day.

“Nikole Hample embodies our belief in celebrating and empowering every learner by fostering a warm, supportive community where students can discover their strengths, build confidence, and truly feel they belong,” they shared. “She consistently goes above and beyond in her role, thoughtfully adding resources for the team to share and ensuring everyone has what they need to help students thrive.”

That sense of belonging isn’t accidental. It’s something Hample builds intentionally, and her colleagues see it in the culture she helps create.

They also point to the energy and care she brings into every space.

“She leads with heart and enthusiasm,” a colleague shared. “From taking charge of Multicultural Night to infusing every space she enters with her impeccable sense of décor, Nikole helps create an environment where students and staff feel proud to be part of Hamilton. Her dedication enriches our school community in countless ways.”

Hample speaks often about the importance of honoring the cultural identities students bring with them into the classroom.

“What I love most is learning about different cultural traditions from my students,” she said. “I always share with students and families that being multi-lingual is the greatest gift.”

That belief shows up in the details. It’s reflected in the materials she creates, the conversations she facilitates, and the environment she helps shape. It’s visible in the way classrooms are decorated, in the stories that are told, and in the events that bring families together.

Hample has played a key role in leading Multicultural Night at Hamilton, helping create a space where families feel seen, valued, and connected. Her attention to detail, from décor to programming, transforms the event into something that feels both welcoming and meaningful. It’s not just a celebration. It’s an extension of the classroom, where culture and community come together.

This year, her work has expanded even further.

She has developed a strong passion for working in autistic support classrooms, where she collaborates with teachers and staff to better support students who navigate both language development and additional learning needs.

“I often say going into those classrooms is the best part of my day,” she shared. “They bring an instant smile to my face.”

Recognizing a need across the district, Hample has begun creating a guide for ELD teachers working with dually identified students. This work is both practical and forward-thinking, aimed at ensuring consistency, clarity, and stronger outcomes for some of the district’s most complex learners.

It’s another example of how her impact reaches beyond Hamilton. She’s not only supporting students in front of her. She’s building systems that will support students across the district.

Her leadership also shows up in the everyday moments that define a school community. She helps maintain welcoming, visually engaging spaces throughout the building, contributes to bulletin boards that reflect student identity and learning, and brings a level of care to her environment that students and staff feel immediately.

She holds high expectations for every student while advocating tirelessly for the supports they need to meet them. That balance, high standards paired with deep care, defines her approach.

Behind her work is a story shaped by resilience and support.

Hample credits her mother and grandfather as early influences who guided her path. Today, she continues to be grounded by her family, especially her husband, whom she describes as her biggest supporter.

She’s also the mother of twin daughters who were born weighing just over a pound each. This year, they celebrated their 16th birthday. That experience has shaped the way she sees growth and possibility.

It’s a perspective that carries into her classroom every day.

At Hamilton Elementary, students are earning to believe in themselves. They’re learning that their voices matter. They’re learning that who they are is something to be proud of.

Through her work, Nikole Hample ensures that those lessons aren’t left to chance. They’re built into every interaction and every opportunity she creates.

Her impact is seen over time, in the confidence of a student who finds their voice, in the success of a former student who returns to share their story, and in the community that continues to grow stronger because of her presence.

At Hamilton Elementary, that work is happening every day. And through educators like Nikole Hample, it’s changing lives.
