McCaskey is searching for its oldest living grad – here’s how to help

McCaskey Alumni Association is looking for its oldest living alum. McCaskey High School in Lancaster city opened in 1938. That June, 274 students, including Olympic sprinter Henry Norwood “Barney” Ewell and Oscar winner Franklin J. Schaffner, graduated as the high school’s first official class.

Nearly 90 years have passed since that first graduation, and the alumni association is looking to identify its oldest living alum. Lorry Miller Eby, president of the alumni association board, said the association hopes to invite them to the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Awards Banquet.

“We would love the opportunity to celebrate him or her formally,” Miller Eby said by email.

The banquet, a public event, is currently scheduled for Oct. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the Imperial Event Center in Lancaster city. Event information is not yet finalized and will be updated on the association’s website and Facebook page.

Hal Shartle, who graduated in 1942 and turned 101 in February, could be the oldest, according to an alumni association representative, but the association wants to be sure.

If you or someone you know graduated from McCaskey in 1942 or earlier, you can reach out to the McCaskey Alumni Association by calling 717-399-6418 or emailing Kathy Arnold at kathylarnold@sdlancaster.org.
