A Message from Mrs. Vazquez-Markley, Principal

WOW! What a year! PSSA’s are in full swing and our students are doing a fabulous job!
There are a lot of fun activities planned for the end of the year with our Spring Musical, assemblies, classroom celebrations, field trips, visits to the middle school and high school and more! It is more important than ever that our students remember to be responsible, respectful, and safe. This is especially important as they are leaving the building to participate in fun experiences. Let’s finish strong so that all students will get to be part of the fun.
I hope to see you at the Spring Musical, Beauty and the Beast, Jr. The students are working so hard under the direction of Mrs. Spolum, Mr. Straub, and Mrs. Betancourt! It is going to be an amazing show!
Join us for one last school fundraiser on Tuesday, May 19 from 5-8pm at Friendly’s Restaurant, 578 Centerville Rd., Lanacaster. Flyers are being sent home in Thursday folders, 4/30. A flyer must be presented when ordering for Ross FTO to receive the donation.
Reading over the summer will be so important to keep up on skills and prepare students for their next grade. Check out the amazing Lancaster Library located at Elwell Plaza, N. Queen St.! They have many fun activities going on this summer!
Ross Field Day will take place on Friday, May 22! It will be a great day!

In May, our K4 friends will wrap up the school year with our exciting Wild Animals theme! Students will explore a variety of animals commonly found in zoos while learning fun facts and engaging in themed activities.
We are also looking forward to our field trip to Lake Tobias, which will be the perfect way to bring our Wild Animals theme to life and celebrate all that we have learned. During the last week of school, students will have the opportunity to vote on and choose different themed days for some extra end-of-year fun. Even as we enjoy these special activities, we will continue working hard on important academic and social skills to help ensure everyone feels confident and ready for kindergarten.
As we head into our final month of kindergarten, students will be buzzing with excitement as we continue to explore entomology—the study of bugs! In ELA, we will build background knowledge by reading and writing about social insects and spiders, practice connecting ideas in texts, and strengthen early reading skills by blending onsets and rimes to read and spell words. In math, we will begin our final unit, Computing & Measuring with Frogs & Bugs, where students will count by 10s and 1s, read, write, order, and compare numbers to 20, estimate and measure length, and solve addition and subtraction story problems within 10. Thank you for your continued support at home with reading and math—it truly makes a difference as we finish the year strong!
First graders are continuing their study of plants as they research and form opinions about plant needs, adaptations and interdependence with other living things. In math, we will begin our final unit on measurement and data. Students will learn about changes in length, time, and numbers as we collect different types of data and analyze them. In science, we will wrap up our study on the sun, moon, and seasons. We will continue to monitor our plants and wait in anticipation for our duck and chicken eggs to hatch. In social studies, students will be working on taking action to affect change in their school community. We appreciate the continued support at home to help the students grow in their math and reading abilities as we push through this final month of school!
Second grade is ready for May flowers! We have been measuring our plants during Number Corner while talking about fractions of wholes and sets. In Math we are going to be at the beginning of Unit 8, which will focus heavily on data, and we will be doing a lot of hands-on activities with marbles and ramps. In ELA, we will continue Unit 4 – Jobs in Our Community. Students will be wrapping up their final research questions and putting their finishing touches on their job-wanted posters. In science, we are exploring animals, plants, and habitats! And finally, in social studies, we will be at the end of our unit on Our Changing Landscape, and students will engage in a writing piece to reflect on the unit. As the year wraps up, we have so many fun things to look forward to and are grateful for your continued support at home to help our students with this final push!
Third-grade Ross Rockets have many fun learning adventures happening in May! Students will complete their Sea Creature Research final projects as they delve into deepening their knowledge about marine life! Our learners are strengthening problem-solving and reasoning skills in math as we explore fractions! In Social Studies, students will learn about cultures and geography from around the world. They will be working with partners to complete research reports about different countries. Students will continue to expand their knowledge about living things, life cycles, and animal habitats in science! We are so excited about our 3rd-grade field trip to the Science Factory where students will have many hands-on Science experiences! We are so proud of our 3rd-grade learners as they continue to work hard at maintaining positive classroom communities filled with kindness and respect for others. Thank you, families, for all of your amazing support with home reading steps! Your learners will continue to grow and thrive as they finish up their 3rd-grade experience at Ross!
Our Fourth Graders have been hard at work across all subjects! In ELA, we will continue to learn about Pennsylvania while integrating social studies concepts, and students will wrap up their research on a state of their choice. They will be creating a final project using Canva to showcase what they’ve learned through informational text. In math, we will review key skills, including multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals to strengthen understanding as we approach the end of the year. In science, we will explore Earth’s features and natural resources. We are looking forward to a strong and successful finish to the school year!

In Art class, students in all grades are working on incorporating the element of art, COLOR, into their artwork. PreK and kindergarten are creating their own colorful fish collages. 1st graders are working on color mixing in their cherry blossom branch painting. 2nd graders are creating a colorful letter design drawing. 3rd graders are creating a positive four-letter word artwork inspired by the famous artist Robert Indiana. 4th graders are creating realistic watercolor crystal paintings. Finally, 5th graders are creating 3D cardboard tropical fish, focusing on color and texture!
In PE, students in all grades are working on baseball skills. Primary students will be hitting off a tee, fielding a softball, and learning how to run around the bases. Intermediate students will hit a ball while the PE teacher pitches to them in a game-like situation, while also working on fielding skills. If your child enjoys this unit, there are many baseball/softball leagues that you could join throughout the Lancaster area.
In Music class, students in PreK – 2nd grade will celebrate the spring season through movement, instrument performance, and singing games. 3rd – 5th grades will continue to practice rhythm reading and rhythm performance while engaging in bucket drumming. Students who are participating in the Spring musical, Beauty and the Beast, Jr., will perform on May 14 and 15 at 7:00. Tickets are on sale now.
Entering Absences in ParentVUE
If your student is absent, please enter their absence through ParentVUE on the day of their absence. If you don’t remember your log-in, or if you’ve not yet set up your account, you may call the office for your log-in information. ParentVUE is an important part of your students’ school records. Easy access for you to enter absences, email their teacher and update your phone number or the phone numbers of emergency contacts.
You may also send a message by email to attendanceross@sdlancaster.org
Parent excuses must be received in the office within 3 school days of the absence.
Volunteer Clearance Platform
The School District of Lancaster is using a new platform for guardian volunteers to upload clearances. Any guardian who would like to chaperone field trips, please plan ahead. When the process is complete, clearances are good for 5 years! It may be a lot of work, but our students’ safety is worth it. Start the process now so when asked, you can say, “Yes! I’d love to chaperone the field trip!”
