McCaskey Graduate Brings “Almost American” to Washington, D.C.

McCaskey graduate Sam Soliman ’16 is using film to tell a deeply personal story about family, immigration and belonging.

Sam’s 15-minute documentary, “Almost American,” follows his family’s experience after his mother, Ester Soliman, a longtime Lancaster resident, was deported to the Philippines last year. The film also shares Sam’s experience as a DACA recipient navigating uncertainty while continuing to build a life in the only community he has ever known.

On Tuesday, June 16, Sam will screen “Almost American” at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C., and participate in a panel discussion about the Dream Act.

As a district, we are proud to see our graduates use their voices, talents and lived experiences to engage in important conversations beyond the classroom. Sam’s work is a powerful reminder that storytelling can create understanding, build empathy and help communities see the people behind the issues.

Congratulations, Sam. Your SDoL community is proud of you.
