A home game gives students a chance to represent their school in front of the people who know them. Families get to see the work that goes into a season, and alumni have a reason to return to a place that remains part of their lives. At McCaskey High School, the stadium’s reopening renewed those connections in a space built to serve another generation.
The School District of Lancaster marked the reopening of Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health Stadium at the Barney Ewell Sports Complex with a ribbon cutting following a year of construction. Held during a student pep rally, the ceremony put students at the center of the celebration.

“Celebrating the ribbon cutting during a pep rally gave our students a chance to be part of the opening,” said McCaskey Principal Dr. Justin Reese. “They’re the ones who will build their high school memories here, and we wanted them to share in the excitement of coming home.”
The improvements reach across the facility, with a new synthetic turf field, renovated grandstands and restrooms, upgraded lighting, two new press boxes and a video board, along with improvements to the weight room. The work also addressed longstanding accessibility and safety needs in a stadium originally built in 1939. These changes will make a practical difference for the students who use the facility and the families who come to support them.

For student-athletes, hours of preparation happen before spectators arrive. Practices fit around classes and homework as students work through mistakes and learn to depend on their teammates.
“Our students put a lot of time into representing McCaskey, and they deserve facilities that support that effort,” said Athletics Director Teasia Peña. “Having this stadium open again means they can compete at home with their classmates and families there to support them. We’re excited to see them make it their own.”

The stadium also offers younger students a glimpse of what’s ahead. Watching McCaskey compete can help them picture themselves taking the field someday, wearing the same colors as the students they’ve come to cheer on.

Its use will extend beyond athletics, with a districtwide reading celebration and a regional marching band competition among the events planned for the renovated space.
“Our school facilities belong to the whole community, and this stadium will serve students and families in many ways,” said Superintendent Dr. Keith Miles. “Along with athletic competitions, we look forward to welcoming families for experiences like our districtwide reading celebration. Thank you to everyone who helped bring this project to completion.”

Congratulations to the McCaskey community on returning home. We look forward to seeing our students take the field and our families back in the stands. For more photos, visit us on Facebook.
