This offering corresponds to most European History courses found in colleges and universities. It consists of a thorough study of European History from the French Revolution to 1995. Students are expected to be familiar with concepts, major historical facts, historical analysis, and the entire chronology of European history during that period. There is a strong emphasis on understanding the themes in modern European history, the consequences of European contacts with other areas of the world, and the analysis of historical evidence. Students are required to study a selection of the following topics: causes, practices and effects of war; nationalist and independence movements, decolonization and challenges facing new states, the rise and rule of single party states, the establishment and work of international organizations, and the Cold War. Students will complete a major research paper.
