Candidate Schools for IB Middle Years Programme

The International Baccalaureate Programmes (IB) challenge students to examine their learning from a wide variety of perspectives using the various characteristics of the IB Learner Profile. With such a diverse student community, our students naturally bring varied viewpoints to classroom conversations and beyond. The IB programmes in the School District of Lancaster embrace an international mindedness that extends beyond our classroom doors into the greater Lancaster city community.

Jackson and Wheatland Middle Schools and E.R. Martin School are candidates for authorization for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme.

IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high quality programs of international education that share a powerful vision.

IB Learner Profile

Each of the IB's programmes is committed to the development of students according to the IB learner profile. The profile aims to develop learners who are:

Inquirers

We nurture our curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research. We know how to learn independently and with others. We learn with enthusiasm and sustain our love of learning throughout life.

Knowledgeable

We develop and use conceptual understanding, exploring knowledge across a range of disciplines. We engage with issues and ideas that have local and global significance.

Thinkers

We use critical and creative thinking skills to analyse and take responsible action on complex problems. We exercise initiative in making reasoned, ethical decisions.

Communicators

We express ourselves confidently and creatively in more than one language and in many ways. We collaborate effectively, listening carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups.

Principled

We act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences.

Open-Minded

We critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others. We seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience.

Caring

We show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.

Risk-Takers

We approach uncertainty with forethought and determination; we work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. We are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.

Balanced

We understand the importance of balancing different aspects of our lives—intellectual, physical, and emotional—to achieve well-being for ourselves and others. We recognize our interdependence with other people and with the world in which we live.

Reflective

We thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experience. We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development.

IB Middle Years Programme

IB MYP is an educational framework that will be implemented in grades 6-10 in SDoL. The foundation of MYP is to create solid relationships for students, so they can excel in their academic studies and apply how those studies reflect real world applications. IB MYP allows students to interact with their community and allows students to give back via the Community Project; this project will be completed in grade 8 and the Personal Project will be completed in grade 10. Allowing students to be risk-takers, effective communicators, and having an open-mind are characteristics that shape the IB MYP.

IB MYP Policies

  • MYP Academic Honesty

Ensuring that the processes and products of a student’s work are completely transparent; that they clearly differentiate between their original work and the work of others; that they honestly and appropriately acknowledge the work of others.

  • MYP Language

Supporting language development as a means for interpersonal, presentational and communicative expression.

  • MYP Inclusion

Providing the least restrictive environment for every student.

  • MYP Assessment

The means by which teachers and students gather information on student progress towards specific learning outcomes; assessments are authentic, meaning that they focus not only on recalling facts but on the ability to apply knowledge and skills to real-world problems; assessments are clearly communicated and have corresponding criteria with which to determine student achievement.
