Extreme Weather Camp

July 17, 2023 @ 12:30 pm - July 27, 2023 @ 4:00 pm

In partnership with the State Impact PA initiative on Climate Solutions and the Lancaster County STEM Alliance, WITF has designed an Extreme Weather curriculum for young scholars in 5th and 6th grades. The scholars will use prior knowledge, a primary source set of photographs, and videos to discuss what they already know about extreme weather on Earth. Then, in inquiry groups, scholars will brainstorm and categorize a list of weather-related phenomena. As part of the inquiry process, they will identify the necessary conditions for weather events to occur, and the factors that affect extreme weather. Scholars will engage with a live weather station located at WITF to collect and analyze weather data; participate in various inquiry STEM projects to discover and explain phenomena; complete two full engineering design process challenges related to structures to withstand high winds and pervious pavement to address flooding. Students will organize information about weather events and conditions, identify patterns, and make connections between weather and climate.

Materials from this camp are sourced by National Geographic, PBS Learning Media, and WITF original content.
