This week’s Staff Shoutout goes to Justin M. Young, a Mathematics Teacher at McCaskey High School, whose dedication to his students extends far beyond equations and formulas.
With 15 years in the district, Justin has spent time shaping young minds at Hand (now Jackson MS) for five years, Martin School for three, and McCaskey HS for the past seven. Over the years, he has become known for his ability to connect with students, challenge them, and help them see their own potential, not just in math but in life. His classroom is a space where students feel safe to struggle, grow, and ultimately succeed.
For Justin, the relationships he builds with students are the most rewarding part of his work. He understands that learning is not just about getting the right answer but about developing confidence, resilience, and critical thinking. He encourages his students to make mistakes and learn from them, reminding them that growth happens in those moments of struggle. He doesn’t just teach math; he mentors and guides students toward becoming the best versions of themselves.
One of the things he values most about working in SDoL is the rich diversity and strong sense of community. He is passionate about the district’s mission to put students first and appreciates that SDoL recognizes that success looks different for every learner. He firmly believes that all students are capable of achieving great things when given the right support and opportunities. His approach to teaching reflects this belief, he creates an environment where students feel encouraged to push past their doubts and discover what they are truly capable of.
A graduate of Warwick High School, Penn State University (Engineering), and Millersville University (Teaching & Master of Education), Justin brings a strong foundation in both analytical thinking and education to his teaching. Outside the classroom, he enjoys board and card games, which reflects his love for strategy, problem-solving, and friendly competition—skills he also nurtures in his students.
While Justin is humble about his accomplishments, his colleagues recognize the lasting impact he has. One colleague shared,
“Justin sees all students as highly capable. He starts from this belief and builds the structure and support they need to thrive. He gets excited about their progress, collaborates with teachers and counselors to promote success, and makes math fun and accessible. For students who doubt their own abilities, he makes it his mission to change their minds.”
Justin, thank you for the care, patience, and passion you bring to your students every day. Your ability to meet students where they are and guide them forward makes a difference in ways that extend far beyond the classroom. McCaskey is stronger because of educators like you!
