Tuesday evening, we learned of the passing of Dr. Carol Powell, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction in the School District of Lancaster, after a courageous, yearlong battle with cancer.
For more than two decades, Dr. Powell, 56, has been a tireless advocate for students, driven to ensure they received rigorous and engaging educational experiences in the classroom. She led a team of curriculum experts in our Office of Teaching and Learning since 2016. Dr. Powell also served in leadership roles for both urban and suburban schools, including Reading and West York School Districts. She started her career work as a secondary school counselor, and led the student services team at Reading School District.
On a personal note, Dr. Powell was a brilliant colleague, known for her unique sense of humor, her catch phrases, and her deep wisdom. She continued to work throughout her tenacious battle with cancer.
Through it all, she insisted we “live our best lives” and continue our work on behalf of the children in SDoL. She will be profoundly missed by her colleagues and friends.
On behalf of the board of directors and our school district community, we send our deepest condolences to Dr. Powell’s family.
