“Teaching history right means confronting its truths and learning from them.” These powerful words by filmmaker Keith Beauchamp resonated deeply with McCaskey High School students during his inspiring visit this week.
Beauchamp, producer of the critically acclaimed film Till, began his day meeting with history students to share his personal journey and deep connection to the story of Emmett Till. He recounted how his 2004 documentary, The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till, became the foundation for the 2022 film that has moved audiences around the globe.
Students were riveted as Beauchamp described his close relationship with Mamie Till-Mobley, Emmett Till’s mother, who trusted him to help amplify her son’s story and her fight for justice. He also shared the challenges of navigating the complexities of producing a film rooted in historical trauma.
“This story has been my life’s work,” Beauchamp explained. “Through the process, I had to trust others with something so personal to me, and together we created a film that not only honors Emmett’s legacy but captures the remarkable courage of his mother.”
Following their morning discussion, students attended a private screening of Till at Penn Cinema. The movie, co-produced by Fred Zollo, Whoopi Goldberg, and Barbara Broccoli, powerfully portrays Mamie Till-Mobley’s relentless pursuit of justice following the brutal lynching of her 14-year-old son in 1955.
Beauchamp encouraged students to think about their role in shaping the future, emphasizing the importance of understanding history to drive meaningful change. “Mamie Till-Mobley was an unsung hero of the civil rights movement,” he said. “Her bravery and love continue to inspire, and her story serves as a reminder of what we can achieve when we confront injustice.”
Throughout the day, Beauchamp’s passion for storytelling and justice was evident. He spoke about his work tracking down witnesses who had never shared their accounts, collaborating with figures like Muhammad Ali and Reverend Al Sharpton, and persistently lobbying to reopen the Emmett Till murder investigation. His dedication has not only impacted film and history but also inspired a new generation of changemakers.
