Carter & MacRae students learn lifesaving skills through ScoutReach and Lancaster EMS

Learning doesn’t only happen in classrooms. Sometimes it happens in the moments that prepare students to help someone in need.

Students participating in the ScoutReach program recently had the opportunity to take part in a hands-on first responder learning experience with Lancaster EMS. During the session, students learned how to perform CPR and how to respond to choking emergencies using the Heimlich maneuver. These practical skills gave students a firsthand understanding of how quick thinking and preparation can make a life-saving difference.

Guided by the experienced professionals at Lancaster EMS, students practiced the techniques and asked questions about emergency response and community health. Lancaster EMS serves our community with a mission focused on saving lives and empowering healthier living through comprehensive and innovative mobile medical health care services. Their willingness to share knowledge with our students reflects the strong partnerships that support learning across Lancaster.

The experience was made possible through the ScoutReach program, an initiative of the Pennsylvania Dutch Council that works to ensure every young person has access to the leadership opportunities and character development offered through Scouting. With a focus on urban and rural communities in Lancaster and Lebanon, ScoutReach emphasizes mentorship, personal growth, and the development of positive life skills.

Programs like this help students build confidence while connecting what they learn to real-world situations. They also reflect the School District of Lancaster’s commitment to meaningful partnerships with community organizations that expand opportunities for our students and strengthen the support systems around them.

Through experiences like this, students are not only learning how to respond in an emergency. They are developing leadership, responsibility, and the confidence to care for others in their community.
