Celebrating Our School Resource Officers: Officer Alan Houck, Wheatland MS

As we approach National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day on Saturday, February 15, the School District of Lancaster proudly recognizes the dedication and service of our school security officers. Today, we highlight Officer Alan Houck of Wheatland Middle School, whose commitment to safety and community has made a meaningful impact on students and staff alike. He supports both middle and elementary schools as part of our School Resource Officer-School Safety Officer (SRO-SSO) model.

A Career Dedicated to Service

Officer Houck’s path to school security began in 2018, but his dedication to serving others spans decades. A retired middle school teacher and coach, a U.S. Marine, and a former retail manager, he brings a diverse skill set and leadership experience to his role. Since transitioning into the security field in 2014, his passion for ensuring a safe and welcoming school environment has grown into a full-time commitment. His ability to build relationships and maintain a positive presence makes him a key member of the school community.

Strengthening School Security Through Partnerships

The collaboration between school security officers, administrators, and local law enforcement is crucial to creating a safe learning environment. Having a trained security officer on campus provides reassurance and allows for immediate response when needed. Officer Houck works closely with school leaders and law enforcement to implement security measures and ensure smooth communication. Through his proactive approach, he helps create a setting where students feel secure and can focus on learning.

A Trusted and Positive Presence

Beyond maintaining security, Officer Houck is known for his approachable demeanor and commitment to building connections. His friendly interactions with students and staff help foster a sense of trust and community. Whether offering words of encouragement in the hallways, assisting with school events, or ensuring that daily operations run smoothly, he consistently demonstrates his dedication. Principal Don Trost shares:

“Alan Houck is the School Security Officer for Wheatland Middle School and the other schools in Lancaster Township. He approaches his work in our school with seriousness and a positive attitude. His interactions with members of the school community are friendly and helpful. His attention to the well-being of everyone at our school makes everyone feel safe.”

Commitment and Perseverance

Officer Houck’s resilience and dedication are evident in both his work and his personal values. He admires Wile E. Coyote, a character known for persistence and determination—traits that mirror his own commitment to his role. His strong faith also guides his approach, reinforcing his belief in service and integrity.

As we lead up to National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day, we extend our appreciation to Officer Houck and all our school security officers who work to keep our schools safe. Their dedication, vigilance, and kindness contribute to a positive and secure learning environment for all.

Thank you, Officer Houck, for your service and dedication to the School District of Lancaster!
