Celebrating Our School Resource Officers: Officer Alexander Miller, Lincoln MS

On Saturday, February 15, we join schools across the country in celebrating National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day. This day serves as a reminder of the invaluable role our School Resource Officers (SROs) play in fostering a safe and supportive learning environment for students, staff, and families. At the School District of Lancaster (SDoL), we appreciate the strong partnership between our schools and law enforcement, which enhances our ability to serve and support our students effectively.

At Lincoln Middle School, we are proud to recognize Officer Alexander Miller, who has been an SRO for six months and a police officer for four years. Since joining Lincoln this school year, Officer Miller has made a meaningful impact by building strong, positive relationships with students, collaborating with teachers, and actively engaging with families. His presence has created an environment where students feel comfortable, supported, and heard, reinforcing the belief that law enforcement can be a valuable ally in their growth and success.

Principal Ryan Schlinkman shares, “Officer Alexander Miller started with us at Lincoln this year, and from the very start, he made himself a very positive support and resource in our school. Officer Miller is a very public and present person at Lincoln and uses his time to make strong connections with students and families. Additionally, Officer Miller regularly supports in our classrooms and collaborates with teachers to present lessons to our students on a variety of topics, including social and peer interaction, reading, health, and science. Lincoln is very fortunate to have Officer Miller as a valuable member of our team, and we thank him for all that he does.”

The Importance of SRO-School Partnerships

Officer Miller believes that the partnership between the SRO program and SDoL provides a wider set of tools and opportunities to support students in finding the best possible outcomes, regardless of the circumstances. His presence fosters trust and encourages positive interactions between students and law enforcement, helping to develop strong community relationships. By working closely with students, staff, and local leaders, SROs like Officer Miller bridge gaps and create an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding.

SROs are more than security personnel. They are mentors, educators, and role models. They provide students with guidance on critical topics, such as conflict resolution, mental health awareness, and digital safety, reinforcing the district’s commitment to holistic education and student well-being.

A Background Rooted in Diversity and Community Engagement

Officer Miller’s journey to Lincoln has been shaped by diverse experiences. Originally from San Diego, California, he also spent time living in Santiago, Chile, where he became fluent in Spanish. This unique background enhances his ability to connect with Lincoln’s diverse student population and provide support to Spanish-speaking students and their families. By bridging cultural and language gaps, he creates an inclusive atmosphere where all students feel seen and valued.

Additionally, his certification through the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) ensures that he brings best practices and expertise in school safety, mentorship, and community engagement. This training enables him to handle sensitive student situations with care, empathy, and professionalism, ensuring that all students receive the support they need to thrive.

Personal Interests and Core Values

Beyond his role at Lincoln, Officer Miller enjoys outdoor activities and is an avid reader, reflecting his commitment to lifelong learning and personal development. He believes that success is not an individual pursuit but a collective effort.

When asked about his favorite cartoon character, Officer Miller chose Naruto Uzumaki, citing his perseverance, dedication, and ability to overcome adversity. “Naruto had to overcome all kinds of challenges in his life but used his unique talents to push through every obstacle in front of him. He never gave up on himself or on his friends, and he worked incredibly hard to achieve his dreams and protect his loved ones.” These values mirror Officer Miller’s own dedication to his role as an SRO. He, too, strives to uplift those around him, ensuring that every student knows they have the ability to overcome challenges and achieve their dreams.

As we celebrate National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day, we extend our gratitude to Officer Miller and all SROs who dedicate their time and efforts to creating a safe, supportive, and engaging school environment. Their commitment to students goes beyond traditional law enforcement duties; they are trusted mentors, advocates, and pillars of the school community.

Thank you, Officer Miller, and all of our SROs, for your service, your dedication, and the positive impact you make in our schools every day. We are proud to have you as part of the SDoL family.
