At the School District of Lancaster, we recognize the vital role our School Resource Officers (SROs) play in fostering a safe and supportive learning environment. As we celebrate National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day on February 15, we want to highlight two outstanding members of our McCaskey community: Officer Carlos Luciano and Officer Josiah King. Their dedication, professionalism, and mentorship make a lasting impact on our students, staff, and families every day.
Building Bridges and Strengthening Community
With over two decades in law enforcement, Officer Carlos Luciano has spent the past 18 years as an SRO. He firmly believes in the power of the partnership between the school district and the police department, emphasizing how these relationships create trust and understanding among students, staff, and the broader community. Officer Luciano brings a warm and approachable presence to McCaskey, always ready to connect with students on a personal level. His favorite saying, “knowledge is power,” reflects his commitment to education and growth.
Officer Josiah King, who has served as a police officer for 20 years and an SRO for four, shares a similar passion for building relationships. He recognizes that by getting to know students on a deeper level, SROs can provide more informed, compassionate support. His belief that every individual is created in God’s image guides his approach to treating all students with respect and dignity. Whether sharing a fun fact—like Abraham Lincoln being in the wrestling hall of fame—or engaging students with his favorite cartoon character, Larry the Cucumber, Officer King makes connections that go beyond the uniform.
Beyond Safety: Mentorship and Support
While their primary role is to ensure a secure school environment, Officers Luciano and King serve as mentors and trusted confidants for students navigating the complexities of high school life. They offer guidance, encourage personal growth, and provide a sense of stability within the McCaskey community. From advising student-led clubs to lending a listening ear during difficult moments, they help shape a positive school climate where all students feel seen and valued.
Dr. Justin Reese, Principal of JP McCaskey-McCaskey East, speaks to the impactful influence these officers have: “Officers Carlos Luciano and Josiah King are cornerstone members of the McCaskey community. Their commitment to safety, mentorship, and professionalism ensures that students and staff feel secure and supported. Whether greeting students at the start of the day, addressing concerns with empathy, or diffusing challenging situations with calm expertise, they create an environment where every individual is valued.”
A Legacy of Dedication
Beyond their work inside the school, Officers Luciano and King strengthen the ties between McCaskey and the surrounding Lancaster community. They collaborate with teachers, administrators, and families to support students holistically. Their presence at community events, school programs, and extracurricular activities showcases their deep investment in the well-being of our students both in and outside the classroom.
As we celebrate School Resource Officer Appreciation Day, we extend our gratitude to Officers Luciano and King for their commitment to the McCaskey community. We are fortunate to have them as part of our McCaskey family, and we honor their dedication today and every day.
