Celebrating the lasting Impact of our educators – a message from Dr. Keith Miles

As we mark Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, the School District of Lancaster is proud to honor the incredible people who make our schools not just places of learning, but spaces of growth, care, and belonging.

Every day, our teachers and staff bring their knowledge, creativity, and heart into the work they do shaping futures, building confidence, and nurturing the next generation of leaders. Their impact reaches far beyond the classroom, often in ways that students carry with them for a lifetime.

Superintendent Dr. Keith Miles recently shared a personal story that reflects this lasting influence:

“This past November, I had the special opportunity to reconnect with my second-grade teacher, Ms. Beverly Battle. Ms. Battle had traveled up from DC for a sorority conference in Hershey, and we met up for dinner at Cork and Cap here in Lancaster. I’ll admit I was a handful back then: full of energy, always on the move, and maybe a bit rambunctious. But what stands out most after all these years isn’t a specific math lesson or reading strategy. What I remember is how Ms. Battle made me feel.

She created a classroom culture rooted in love, support, and belonging. She welcomed me with openness and patience, and at a time in my life when I needed it most, she made me feel seen, accepted, and valued.

This is the lasting power of great educators. To all the incredible teachers across the School District of Lancaster: thank you for doing just that creating memories that last a lifetime and changing lives, one student at a time. Your work matters more than words can say. Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!”

Dr. Miles’ reflection is a reminder of the true essence of teaching: it’s not only about lessons and tests, it’s about making students feel safe, capable, and supported. That emotional foundation is often what lingers the longest, shaping who we become and how we see the world.

This week, and every week, we thank the teachers, aides, custodians, secretaries, counselors, nurses, food service workers, and every staff member who pours their energy and care into our students. You are the heart of our schools, and your dedication does not go unnoticed.

Keep an eye out for this year’s Teacher and Staff Appreciation video, coming later this week it’s just one way we’re highlighting the powerful work you do each and every day.

To our entire SDoL community: we invite you to join us in celebrating by thanking a teacher or staff member who’s made a difference in your life.
