On Friday, September 5, McCaskey High School hosted a series of Changing the Narratives assemblies focused on creating connection and leadership opportunities for our students. These assemblies were designed to support 9th graders as they transition into high school and to launch a new cooperative mentoring program linking Lincoln Middle School students with McCaskey student-athletes.
The first assemblies of the day welcomed 9th graders from both the JP and East buildings. Students gathered to hear messages reminding them that while the transition to high school can feel overwhelming, they are not alone. Staff, peers, and mentors shared personal stories that highlighted determination and the importance of community. These conversations were aimed at helping every student feel seen, valued, and capable of achieving success at McCaskey.
In the afternoon, all McCaskey athletes joined Lincoln 8th graders in the East Auditorium for a combined session. This assembly marked the start of a new mentoring partnership designed to create strong connections between middle and high school students. By sharing their own experiences balancing academics, athletics, and leadership, McCaskey student-athletes offered Lincoln students a glimpse of what lies ahead and encouraged them to set ambitious goals for their futures.
Mentorship provides younger students with trusted role models and gives older students the opportunity to step into leadership, accountability, and service. They are shaping a culture of support and belonging that extends across grade levels.
The Changing the Narratives initiative would not be possible without the dedication of community leaders. Thank you to Tavon Parker for investing in our students and for believing in the power of mentorship. His commitment to creating opportunities and shifting perspectives helps ensure that students see themselves not just as learners, but as leaders with the ability to impact their peers and community.
At the School District of Lancaster, we believe education is about more than academics, it’s about building relationships, nurturing confidence, and inspiring growth. The Changing the Narratives assemblies are one step forward in ensuring that every student feels supported and ready to thrive.
