Recognition doesn’t always capture the full story of what happens inside a classroom. It can point to excellence, highlight impact, and name the difference one educator makes, but the real work lives in the moments that don’t come with an audience.
That’s what makes the Citadel Heart of Learning Award meaningful.
Each year, Citadel Credit Union honors educators across Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, Lancaster, and Philadelphia counties through the Citadel Heart of Learning Award. Now in its 25th year, the program has collected thousands of nominations, each one telling a story about a teacher who changed something for a student.
This year, that recognition comes to the School District of Lancaster through science teacher Kim McFadden, named a Grand Prize Winner for Lancaster County.
Her classroom is built around something deeper than content.

Students walk into her room carrying more than a schedule. Many are refugees or newly arrived students learning how to navigate a new country, a new language, and a new school system all at once. Before they can fully access content, they are learning how to read directions in English, how to collaborate with peers, and how to follow routines that feel completely unfamiliar.
Kim McFadden understands that learning starts there.
Her approach to science is hands-on, visual, and accessible across language levels. Concepts are not just explained, they are experienced. Students build, test, observe, and engage in ways that allow them to participate fully, even when language is still developing. In her classroom, STEM becomes a bridge. It gives students a way to interact with ideas, with each other, and with their own confidence.
Her work reflects what we strive for as a district.

Kim serves as a steady, trusted presence for families navigating a system that can feel overwhelming. She helps bridge communication, offering guidance and reassurance during moments of uncertainty. Within her school, she supports colleagues, sharing strategies, offering insight, and contributing to a culture where collaboration strengthens the work happening in every classroom.
This is what we mean when we talk about a culture of belonging.
In the School District of Lancaster, we are committed to ensuring every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed . That commitment lives in classrooms like hers, where instruction meets students where they are and creates pathways forward. It reflects a belief that academic success is deeply connected to whether a student feels seen, understood, and capable.
Kim McFadden’s classroom reflects that belief every day.
Students in her classroom grow into their voices. They learn how to navigate a system that once felt unfamiliar. They begin to see themselves as capable, as confident, as part of something. Beyond her classroom, she supports families as they adjust, mentors colleagues, and contributes to a school environment where care and consistency matter.
That kind of work doesn’t always stand in the spotlight. But it shapes everything around it.

As a Grand Prize Winner, she will receive $5,000, with an additional $5,000 awarded to McCaskey High School. Across the region, the Citadel Heart of Learning Awards will distribute more than $100,000 to educators whose work is shaping classrooms and communities.
For us, this recognition is a moment to pause and acknowledge what we see every day.
