Climbing higher, one brave second at a time: Local educator and student publishes children’s book “52 Seconds”

We are proud to celebrate the publication of 52 Seconds, a new children’s book co-authored by local educator and author Dr. Todd M. Mealy and his son, Carter Lee Mealy. This heartfelt story, told through the eyes of a young boy named Champion, invites readers into a moment many children know well, being scared, and shows how even the smallest steps can lead to something much bigger.

When Champion’s family plans a dinner at the top of Niagara Falls’ Skylon Tower, he’s gripped by fear. An 800-foot elevator ride feels out of reach. But instead of backing out, Champion listens as his dad offers a simple plan: take it slow, one goal at a time. What follows is a journey that highlights the quiet power of encouragement, planning, and being willing to try.

Todd Mealy, who teaches History, oversees the Buddy Glover Project and coaches football in Lancaster and beyond, has spent more than two decades exploring the relationship between sports, education, and civil rights through his writing and scholarship. He earned his Ph.D. from Penn State University-Harrisburg and has published multiple works on subjects ranging from Muhammad Ali to the use of athletics in military training during the world wars.

While much of Todd’s work has focused on history and justice, 52 Seconds is something new, a collaboration with his son, Carter, who is beginning his own writing journey with a focus on helping kids work through everyday fears. Together, they’ve created a story that speaks directly to young readers and the adults who support them.

The Mealy family, Todd, Melissa, Carter, and Adeline, lives here in Lancaster, where storytelling is a part of how they learn, grow, and connect. Their book reminds us that courage isn’t always loud. Sometimes it sounds like a deep breath in an elevator. Sometimes it looks like a list of goals on a scrap of paper.

Congratulations to Todd and Carter on creating something that will speak to many families in our schools and community. We look forward to seeing 52 Seconds in the hands of students who need it most!

We’re proud to celebrate voices in our community who lift each other up, one second at a time.
