Fulton Elementary School, part of the School District of Lancaster, hosted an inspiring College & Career Day, focusing this assembly on the heroic work of first responders. The event welcomed a variety of professionals, including Lancaster City police officers, police social workers, firefighters, paramedics, and medical professionals, who shared their experiences and knowledge with eager young minds.
The theme of “First Responders” brought a particular significance to this year’s event. Students had the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogues, asking questions and exploring the day-to-day challenges and rewards associated with careers in public safety and emergency services.
A highlight of the event was the attendance of Fulton Elementary’s own graduate, Captain Samar Rudolph, who recently made history as the first Black firefighter to be promoted to Captain in Lancaster County. Captain Rudolph, who advanced from the rank of Lieutenant earlier this year, spoke passionately about his journey, the importance of service, and the impact one can make through a career dedicated to helping others. Watch the ABC news story that features him here.
“Having our local heroes here today, especially a distinguished alum like Captain Rudolph, greatly inspires our students. It shows them the importance of dedication, resilience, and community service,” said Mary Sotomayor, School Counselor at Fulton. “Our students were thrilled to interact with the first responders, and we believe these experiences can ignite aspirations for their future.”
The professionals who participated took time from their demanding schedules to engage with the students in a series of question-and-answer sessions, providing insights into the skills and education needed to pursue a career in emergency services. The event also included demonstrations of emergency equipment and vehicles, offering students a hands-on understanding of the tools used in the field.
This initiative is part of the School District of Lancaster’s ongoing effort to provide students with diverse educational opportunities that highlight potential career paths and the wide range of possibilities available to them in their future educational and professional pursuits.
“We are grateful to all the first responders who joined us today and to our community for continuing to support educational enrichment programs,” said Phil Jago, Coordinator of College and Career Services “Their participation not only enhances our curriculum but also helps build strong connections between students and the community they live in.”
