On Thursday, September 11, the Jackson Middle School community gathered together with administrators and local service members to commemorate the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The ceremony included a moment of silence to honor the lives lost and the countless individuals whose acts of courage and compassion continue to inspire us today.
For many of our students, 9/11 is part of history they have only read about or heard described by parents, teachers, or community members. The ceremony created space for them to learn what that day meant and to see how remembrance continues to shape our collective identity. By standing side by side with service members, they were reminded that the events of 2001 were not only about tragedy, but also about service and unity.
Administrators and staff guided the recognition with words of reflection, helping students understand the importance of honoring both those who perished and those who rushed forward in the aftermath to help their neighbors. The presence of local service members brought those lessons to life, highlighting the ongoing role of sacrifice and commitment in keeping our communities safe.
As the school observed a moment of silence, there was a powerful sense of stillness. It was a reminder that even 24 years later, the weight of 9/11 continues to be felt and that pausing together can help us carry those lessons forward.
At the School District of Lancaster, we believe commemoration is not only about looking back, but also about guiding the next generation toward empathy and responsibility. Jackson Middle School’s recognition ceremony reflected those values, giving students a chance to honor the past while considering the role they play in shaping a more caring future.
We are grateful to our administrators, educators, and service members for making this moment possible, and to our students for engaging with it so thoughtfully. As a community, we continue the important work of remembrance, ensuring that the stories of 9/11 are never forgotten.
