Honoring Juneteenth: Offices are closed on Thursday, June 19

On Thursday, June 19, the School District of Lancaster will observe Juneteenth, and all district offices will be closed. We will resume normal operations on Monday, June 23.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and serves as a time to celebrate and honor Black history and  freedom. We encourage our SDoL families and community members to take part in the events happening across Lancaster from story time and crafts to the flag raising and community block party.

As a district committed to equity and inclusion, we believe in the importance of commemorating Juneteenth not only as a historic milestone but also as a continued call to action to build a more just and inclusive society for all students and families.

We invite our SDoL community to participate in local Juneteenth events throughout Lancaster. The day begins with a coffee hour and children’s storytime at the Stevens & Smith Center for History and Democracy, followed by the annual Juneteenth flag raising at City Hall. The celebrations continue into the afternoon with a block party on the 400 block of Rockland Street, featuring food trucks, local vendors, art, live entertainment, and community resource tables.

These events are free and open to the public, offering opportunities for people of all ages to learn, connect, and honor this important day together.
