Honoring SDoL leader at 3rd annual Bright Side Opportunities Center Sneaker Ball

The 3rd Annual Bright Side Opportunities Center Sneaker Ball was a night that captured the best of Lancaster, community coming together and voices being lifted. As hundreds gathered to celebrate and uplift the mission of Bright Side, the School District of Lancaster had the privilege of honoring one of our own, Jassinya “Jas” Alvarado, Director of Educational Access & Equity, recipient of this year’s Diversity & Integrity Award.

Bright Side Opportunities Center was founded with a vision to strengthen families, create safe spaces, and provide access to programs that equip children and adults alike with the tools they need to thrive. Over the last quarter century, Bright Side has become a cornerstone of the southwest Lancaster community, offering educational support, career readiness programs, health and wellness opportunities, and cultural enrichment. What began as a local effort to meet community needs has grown into a trusted institution that changes lives every day.

This year’s Sneaker Ball raised more than $109,000 to continue fueling that mission, ensuring that Bright Side can carry forward its work of empowering youth and families for generations to come. It was an unforgettable celebration of generosity and purpose.

In the midst of this milestone anniversary, the evening also shined a spotlight on Jas, the recipient of the Diversity & Integrity Award, sponsored by the Lancaster County Community Foundation. This award is presented annually to an individual who challenges the status quo, dismantles barriers, and builds systems where everyone belongs.

Jas embodies this spirit in every sense. A proud McCaskey graduate and lifelong Lancaster resident, she has spent her career ensuring that our students have equitable access to opportunities and that their voices are not only heard but valued. From advocating for her own family to leading districtwide efforts that center restorative practices, inclusion, and systemic change, Jas has become a champion for student voice and a model of community-rooted leadership.

Her recognition at Bright Side’s Sneaker Ball reflects the collective progress we make when we center equity and integrity in education and beyond. Jas continues to remind us that equity is not just about access, but about belonging, and that true leadership means creating spaces where every person is affirmed and supported.

As a district, we are proud of Jas for this well-deserved honor. And as members of the Lancaster community, we are grateful for the powerful role Bright Side Opportunities Center plays in building a city where students, families, and neighbors can flourish together.

It was, indeed, a night to celebrate. Congratulations Jas!
