Investing in Their Future: How YES Day! Empowers Our Middle School Students

At the School District of Lancaster, we know that education goes beyond textbooks and tests, it’s about preparing students for the real world. That’s why YES! (Your Economic Success) Day, a program led by Junior Achievement, is a hands-on experience that helps middle school students connect their education to their future success.

This week, students at Lincoln Middle School, Reynolds Middle School, and Martin School participated in YES Day!, where they explored essential topics like career readiness, entrepreneurship, and personal finance. Guided by more than 30 community volunteers and SDoL staff members, students took part in interactive lessons that challenged them to think critically about their future, learning how to budget, make informed financial choices, and explore different career paths.

For many students, conversations about money management, job opportunities, and financial responsibility are new territory. Through engaging activities, they learned the importance of making sound financial decisions and how their current education plays a pivotal role in shaping their career opportunities. They didn’t just sit and listen; they problem-solved, collaborated, and put their critical thinking skills to the test—skills that will serve them well in high school and beyond.

Programs like YES Day! are crucial in shaping how students view their futures. When young people are given the opportunity to see themselves in different career roles and understand the power of financial literacy, they become more confident and motivated in their education. These lessons provide a sense of ownership over their futures and equip them with knowledge that extends far beyond the classroom.

This initiative wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated community members, volunteers, and staff who step into classrooms to share their experiences and expertise. Their involvement demonstrates the power of mentorship and real-world learning, reinforcing the idea that success is within reach when students are given the right tools and guidance.

At SDoL, we remain committed to ensuring that students have access to meaningful, real-world learning experiences that prepare them for life after graduation. Our partnership with Junior Achievement is a key part of that mission, and we are grateful for their continued commitment to our students.

To everyone who made this experience possible, thank you. Your time, effort, and dedication have sparked inspiration in the minds of our students.
