Nearly 470 students took to the streets on Friday afternoon for the first Jackson Day of Action. Students from Jackson Middle School gave back to their community by picking up trash, washing cars, and delivering hand painted pumpkins and flowers to homes throughout their neighborhood.
This day is dedicated to Hazel I. Jackson for whom their school was recently renamed. Ms. Jackson was the first female African American educator in the School District of Lancaster.
“This day is so fitting. Not only was my mother an educator but civic duty was always a part of who she was as a woman,” said Ms. Jackson’s daughter Cheryl Holland-Jones. “It’s important for our youth to understand the importance of giving back.”
The United Way, the primary sponsor, donated $500 for this initiative. The City of Lancaster, Junior League of Lancaster Co., sisters from Millersville’s Zeta Pi Beta and other volunteers also supported this project.
