Lancaster, PA – Let’s Go 1-2-3 is pleased to partner with School District of Lancaster and supporting partners to invite students, faculty, and our community to plant 45+ trees at McCaskey High School. This event will honor the memory of Brother Frank Albrecht, who served as an educator for more than 40 years and had a heart for McCaskey. Together we will discover the value of native trees, learn how to plant large bare root trees, and the importance of tree care!

“We are so thrilled to honor the legacy of Frank Albrecht in a manner that exemplifies his love of people, the outdoors and green spaces. Frank believed in the importance of outdoor spaces and their importance in the lives of all. Through this incredible partnership, and with the generous support of so many, we will be able to guarantee peaceful and welcoming spaces at McCaskey.” said Principal Justin L. Reese, McCaskey High School.
This event will include information on SDoL’s vision to work with Let’s Go 1-2-3 and community partners to increase and restore urban tree canopy and greenspaces on campus, provide tree information, and a tutorial on planting bare root trees led by DCNR. Teams of volunteers will plant native trees to increase McCaskey’s urban forest. By working together, we will connect students and community to their green space and the multitude of benefits that come from protecting and restoring our urban environment.
Attendees will have an opportunity to receive a free native tree or shrub. Species include sweetbay magnolia, flowering dogwood, serviceberry, black chokeberry, spicebush, and gray dogwood.
SDoL is the second oldest district in Pennsylvania. Established in 1836, McCaskey High School is one of 19 schools. With more than 10,000 students in the district, protecting and restoring green space at this campus and throughout the district – will offer students and faculty hands-on opportunities to connect to nature and strengthen environmental literacy standards. Benefits of urban tree planting include increasing shade canopy (especially during hot summers), absorbing stormwater runoff, providing food and habitat to birds and other wildlife, and restoring native species like pawpaws, persimmons, and other edible species that once spanned across our city. Additionally, this project will provide recreational access and environmental opportunities to students and the community.
