Two School District of Lancaster educators, Kelsey and Taylor Pfaff, teachers at Wharton and Wickersham Elementary School, spent their summer 6,000 miles from home not to unwind, but to deepen their students’ learning. Fund for Teachers to study sustainable fishing and aquatic ecosystems in Japan.
Their goal is to enrich their classroom lessons and deepen their students’ connection to environmental science. From fly fishing in Hokkaido to early morning boat trips in a quiet coastal village, the couple explored hands-on ways to bring environmental science to life.
Back in Lancaster, both teachers lead Trout in the Classroom, where students raise and release trout while learning about ecosystems, water quality, and conservation. Their Japan trip builds on that work with new tools, new stories, and renewed purpose.
