Naomi-Jeanne Main, a J.P. McCaskey High School senior/IB diploma candidate, is a semifinalist in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program! Naomi will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million that will be offered in the spring of 2022.
At McCaskey, Naomi is the president of the orchestra, captain of the varsity cross country team, lead coordinator of voter registration efforts, and a member of the National Honor Society and Tri-M Music honorary. She is currently conducting research and surveying the community on music access opportunities in Lancaster, with the goal of informing efforts to improve SDoL students’ engagement in their school music programs and access to music mentors.
Outside of school, Naomi is an active ensemble performer and an accomplished youth violinist. A student at the Temple Center for Gifted Young Musicians, Naomi is concertmaster of the Allegretto Youth Orchestra and a member of the endowed Braverman Advanced Study Quartet at Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. She also plays locally with the Berks Sinfonietta and the Liminal Space jazz-pop combo, and has been seated in the All-East, All-State, regional, and district orchestras. Naomi was the 2021 recipient of the Lancaster Women’s Symphony Association Young Instrumentalist Grand Prize Award, for which she received a $5000 scholarship.
When she is not in school or playing violin, Naomi enjoys reading Latin texts, serving as a poll worker and canvasser, playing bells and chimes at her church, and tending a small flock of feminist chickens. She looks forward to attending a conservatory at a liberal arts college next year, in preparation for a career in orchestral performance.
