Planting curiosity: The Edible Classroom’s Bucket Garden Program blooms at SDoL

At Price and Burrowes Elementary Schools, students are digging into something new this fall, literally. With the launch of The Edible Classroom’s Bucket Garden Program, our youngest learners are getting hands-on lessons that blend science, nutrition, and teamwork.

On the very first day, students planted cucumber seedlings and dill seeds into buckets, transforming simple containers into growing spaces full of possibility. They also prepared and shared cucumber slices as a garden snack, learning along the way that cucumbers are made up of 95% water. For some, the experience was their very first taste. One student exclaimed, “I never had a cucumber before and I love it! I could eat this every day!”

Programs like this highlight the power of experiential learning. By caring for plants and tasting the harvest, students not only gain knowledge about healthy foods and where they come from, but they also build a deeper connection to nature and to one another. Each bucket becomes becomes a classroom, a laboratory, and a dining table all in one.

We’re grateful for partners like The Edible Classroom, whose innovative approach to garden-based education helps our students discover new skills, new tastes, and new ways of learning. As the cucumbers and dill grow, so will the students’ sense of curiosity, confidence, and community. For more photos, visit us on Facebook.
