Recognizing our Digital and Print Resource Specialists on National School Librarian Day

Each year on April 4, National School Librarian Day gives us the opportunity to pause and celebrate an often-overlooked group of educators who make a meaningful difference in our students’ academic journeys: our Digital and Print Resource Specialists (DPRS).

Here at the School District of Lancaster, we are proud to honor our DPRS, not just for managing our libraries, but for the many roles they play within our schools. They are reading advocates, research experts, tech-savvy problem solvers, and trusted mentors. They help students discover new worlds through literature and support teachers in delivering engaging, inclusive learning experiences across every subject area.

Our DPRS create environments where students feel seen, supported, and safe. They thoughtfully curate books that reflect the identities and lived experiences of our diverse student population. They introduce new authors, genres, and perspectives that broaden young minds and build empathy. Many students find their favorite books, or even their future career interests, because of a conversation or recommendation from their DPRS.

But their work doesn’t stop at print materials. In our increasingly digital world, they help students navigate online research, evaluate the credibility of sources, and use educational technology in responsible and creative ways. They support the rollout of digital tools across classrooms, assist with device troubleshooting, and make sure both staff and students have access to the resources they need to succeed.

Perhaps most importantly, our DPRS make the library a place where students want to be. Whether it’s through lunchtime book clubs, student-led library displays, or quiet spaces for reading and reflection, they create welcoming spaces where every child can feel a sense of belonging.

Today, and every day, we thank our DPRS for the countless ways they enhance learning, foster curiosity, and contribute to the academic and emotional growth of our students. You are an essential part of the fabric of our school communities, and we are grateful for your work.

Happy National School Librarian Day!
