Citing several ongoing district initiatives, the School District of Lancaster board of directors unanimously adopted a resolution to “foster an equitable, inclusive and anti-racist environment for every student, staff member, parent and community member.”
The resolution commits the board to continue existing programs such as mentoring for Black youth in middle school, developing a district equity policy, and professional development as well as initiating an equity audit.
Director Salina Almanzar (pictured) introduced the resolution during the meeting. She serves on the district’s Equity Design Team.
“This resolution is an important frame for the work we’ve been doing around Equity and Inclusion,” Almanzar said. “We are certainly not perfect and need to deeply examine more practices, programs, curriculum and more. I think this resolution helps us recall why we’re doing this work: to ensure that no student in our district and no person in our community is held back, oppressed, or hurt by the system we inherited. It is long overdue.”
