SDoL Pre-K welcomes authors Ali Kamanda and Jorge Redmond to empower young readers

The School District of Lancaster welcomed authors Ali Kamanda and Jorge Redmond to our Pre-K classrooms, where they shared their new book, Black Girl, Black Girl, with our youngest learners. The authors spent the day reading to students, sparking joy and empowering them with stories that celebrate Black girls and the beauty of diversity. As a special gift, each child received a copy of the book to take home, adding an inspiring new story to their personal libraries thanks to the generous support of Read Rose Books.

“Our goal continues to be to fill our Pre-K classrooms and students’ home libraries with books that represent and reflect our beautifully diverse population,” said Dr. Shuan Perez, Instructional Program Manager of State & Federal Programs of the School District of Lancaster. “Having Black men read to our children about empowering Black girls is a powerful step towards that goal and creates a meaningful impact in our community.”

For over twenty years, the School District of Lancaster has been committed to serving at-risk preschool-aged children and their families within Lancaster City. Our high-quality, standards-based early learning classrooms are designed to support the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical development of children, ensuring they are well-prepared for the transition to Kindergarten.

The Pre-K program is available to any child who is 4 years old on or before September 1, and we strive to create an inclusive environment that nurtures the unique identities of every child.

Today’s event with Ali Kamanda and Jorge Redmond exemplifies our ongoing commitment to providing enriching educational experiences that inspire and empower our students. Together, we are building a brighter future for all.
