SDoL selects Alvarado as Director of Diversity, Equity, Belonging, and Inclusion

A McCaskey High School graduate and student services administrator is being promoted to the district’s first director of diversity, equity, belonging, and inclusion. The school board approved the appointment of Jassinya Alvarado to the post at its October meeting, and she assumed the role the following day.

“My goal is to cultivate an inclusive and equitable educational community,” Alvarado said, “where every student, staff member, and family is seen, heard, and valued, and where diverse perspectives and experiences are embraced to foster a culture of belonging and mutual respect.”

For the past five years, Alvarado has been a coordinator and, most recently, assistant director, of school climate, where she led work implementing a district-wide framework for multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) and reducing chronic absenteeism.

“Jassinya emerged from a national pool of qualified applicants by demonstrating the right vision, experience, and familiarity with our district to lead this important work,” said superintendent Dr. Keith Miles.

As the director of diversity, equity, belonging, and inclusion, Alvarado will ensure the district implements its equity policy with fidelity, provide and direct professional development for staff, produce materials, establish community partnerships, and advise leaders on diversity, equity, belonging, and inclusion efforts.

Though culturally-responsive practices, reimagining the district’s equity steering committee, and community engagement, Alvarado says she hopes to “dismantle systemic barriers, promote accountability, and foster a supportive environment where each individual can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.”

Alvarado was a member of the district’s equity steering committee since she joined the district 2019. A former English teacher and ELA department co-chair, Alvarado earned a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Millersville University and a master’s degree in educational administration from Grand Canyon University. She is scheduled to complete her doctoral degree in 2026.

“As a proud McCaskey graduate, I never imagined I would have the opportunity to help create spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued,” Alvarado said, “where they can express their individuality while fostering a deeper understanding of others.”

Korynn Wagner, currently a coordinator of school climate, will serve in Alvarado’s vacated role as interim assistant director of school climate until further notice.
