SDoL welcomes news leaders: Dr. April Hershey, Chris Lopez, and Anita Pilkerton-Plumb Sworn In

On Wednesday, September 4, 2024, the School District of Lancaster welcomed its newest leaders as Judge Jodie Richardson officially swore in Dr. April Hershey and Chris Lopez as Assistant Superintendents, alongside Anita Pilkerton-Plumb as the newest School Board Director. This moment marks the beginning of a new chapter for our district as we continue to focus on excellence in education and community engagement.

The district is undergoing a strategic reorganization, consolidating several departments under two newly appointed assistant superintendents. This leadership restructuring follows the departure of former Assistant Superintendent Matthew Przywara, who stepped down in August 2024.

Dr. April Hershey: Assistant Superintendent

Dr. April Hershey, who led the Warwick School District as Superintendent for 15 years, steps into her new role as Assistant Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Hershey will oversee the offices of school leadership, data analytics, curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Her focus will include supporting elementary and middle school principals, ensuring high academic standards, and driving student success.

Superintendent Dr. Keith Miles shared his excitement about Dr. Hershey’s appointment, stating, “It is a tremendous opportunity for our district to bring someone with Dr. Hershey’s track record and experience onto our leadership team. My team and I are very excited to work with her.”

Chris Lopez: Assistant Superintendent

Chris Lopez, who previously served as the district’s Executive Director of Student Services, has been promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Student Services. In his expanded role, Lopez will oversee key areas including special education, student services, safety, college and career readiness, and alternative education programs. He will also supervise the high school principal, with a particular focus on mental health and student well-being, areas emphasized in the district’s strategic plan.

Dr. Miles highlighted the importance of this reorganization, stating, “The mental health and well-being of our students is a top priority in our strategic plan, and this reorganization elevates this work to the highest levels of our organization.”

Anita Pilkerton-Plumb: New School Board Director

Anita Pilkerton-Plumb fills the vacancy left by Cheryl Desmond, who resigned in August 2024 to focus on family, professional, and personal commitments.

Anita Pilkerton-Plumb brings extensive experience as a licensed clinical social worker and a dedicated community volunteer. With a focus on reducing mental health stigma and supporting youth and families, she has been an active participant in various district initiatives, including Parent-Teacher Organizations (PTOs), the Parent Advisory Council (PAC), and the district’s wellness committee. Pilkerton-Plumb is also a strong supporter of the arts and the LGBTQ+ community.

Her connection to the School District of Lancaster runs deep, as she is the parent of a 2022 McCaskey graduate and a current McCaskey student. Her professional background includes a degree in Human Development and Family Studies from Penn State University and a Master’s in Social Work from Temple University.

As the district welcomes these leaders, we look forward to the future they will help shape. Their dedication to education, mental health, and community engagement will be instrumental in advancing the district’s goals. Click here to view photos from swearing in.
