Staff Shoutout: Alexys Darrenkamp, Burrowes ES

This week, we’re shining a spotlight on Alexys Darrenkamp, Dean of Students at Burrowes Elementary School! Although this is Alexys’ first year with SDoL, she has already made an impact on both our students and staff. Her passion for education and people is evident in every interaction, and her commitment to creating a positive and supportive learning environment is inspiring.

When Alexys talks about her job, her favorite part is clear: the students. “Building positive and strong relationships with students across our building is by far the most rewarding aspect of my role,” she shares. Each day, Alexys finds joy in seeing students grow, whether it’s through a small step toward a personal goal, a smile that shows their progress, or a check-in that reflects a positive change in their day. For Alexys, these moments of success, however small, are the heart of her work.

But it’s not just the students who inspire her. The support and collaboration she has found within the Burrowes Elementary community have made her feel right at home. “My colleagues have shown me nothing but kindness and grace since I started,” Alexys says, expressing deep gratitude for the warmth she’s experienced. “They keep me going on the hardest days.” Alexys is equally appreciative of the Dean cohort and School Climate team at SDoL, who’ve created a safe space for her to express herself both personally and professionally. Thanks to their support, Alexys has been able to grow tremendously in a short amount of time and feels thankful for the incredible people she works alongside.

Her journey to SDoL began in Forest City, PA, where Alexys graduated from Forest City Regional High School before going on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree from West Chester University. She’s now finishing up her Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, along with her Principal Certification, which she will officially receive this December. Alexys’ commitment to education and professional growth is steadfast, and she’s driven by a genuine passion for helping others.

While Alexys’ professional life is centered on education, she sees her role as so much more than that – it’s about people. “My number one goal has ALWAYS been to help people,” she says. Whether it’s offering a hug, a listening ear, or just a smile, Alexys is there for anyone who needs support. She believes that, at the core of her work, it’s not just about teaching – it’s about caring for people and making them feel valued. “I’ll be there for you,” she says, quoting the famous line from Friends, and it’s clear that Alexys truly lives by this sentiment.

So far this year, Alexys has had countless moments of joy, not only because of the progress her students make, but because she gets to be part of their journey. Her work isn’t about grand accomplishments; it’s about the small victories – the moments when a student’s hard work pays off, when they reach a goal, or when they simply feel seen and supported.

One of Alexys’ colleagues shared, “Every single day, Alexys shows up with a heart full of dedication, love, and happiness. She consistently provides clear communication to staff and students and implements interventions with confidence and care. She’s truly an invaluable member of our team.”

Alexys has already become a pillar in the Burrowes community, and it’s clear that her heart, her work, and her passion will continue to inspire both students and colleagues alike for many years to come.

Thank you, Alexys, for everything you do. We are beyond lucky to have you as part of the School District of Lancaster family!
