In classrooms at Milestones, progress often shows up in small but powerful moments. A student who learns to trust again. A challenging situation that ends in calm conversation. A learner who begins to believe they can succeed. For paraprofessional Arielys Ortiz, those moments are what make the work meaningful.
Now in her second year with the School District of Lancaster, Arielys serves as a paraprofessional at Milestones, where she supports students who benefit from specialized academic and behavioral support. In a classroom environment built around high expectations and individualized instruction, her role is both dynamic and deeply relational. Throughout the day, Arielys works closely with students to help them stay engaged in learning, manage challenges, and build the skills they need to succeed both in and beyond the classroom.
For Arielys, the most rewarding moments come when students begin to see their own progress.
“My favorite part of the job is all of my amazing students,” she shared. “I love watching them meet their goals and succeed. There’s nothing better than seeing one of my students transition back to their home schools.”
Those transitions represent more than academic progress. They reflect the confidence and stability students develop through consistent support and encouragement.
Colleagues say Arielys plays a key role in creating that supportive environment. One colleague who nominated her for this recognition described her as an indispensable member of the Milestones team whose presence helps shape a classroom culture built on both high standards and compassion.
“Ms. Ortiz brings an incredible balance of dedication and empathy to her work,” the colleague shared. “She takes the time to build authentic relationships with students, and that trust makes a tremendous difference. Her trauma-informed approach ensures students feel safe, supported, and ready to grow.”
Those relationships are something Arielys works intentionally to build each day. She takes pride in understanding the individual needs of her students and creating a space where they feel valued and respected.
One of her proudest accomplishments this school year has been developing strong, positive relationships with the students she supports.
“I pride myself in being able to deescalate my students because of the relationships we’ve built,” she said. “When students know you’re on their side, it helps them feel calmer and more confident.”
Originally from Lancaster, Arielys graduated from Mannheim Township High School in 2022. Her interest in working with students began while she was still in high school through a program called Blue Streak Connections, which provided opportunities to support students with special needs.
“That experience really opened my eyes,” she explained. “I loved working with those students. It helped me realize how important it is to have people who believe in you and advocate for you.”

That early experience led her toward a path in special education. After beginning college, she decided to pursue work in the field and gained additional experience working at IU13 in an alternative school setting before joining the School District of Lancaster.
Working in those environments reinforced the impact supportive adults can have on students who may be navigating difficult circumstances.
“My why is the kids at Milestones,” Arielys said. “Working in alternative settings showed me how important it is to give students someone who is always on their side.”
Her commitment to that work continues to grow. Arielys is currently taking classes with the goal of earning a degree in special education so she can eventually become a teacher.
Another aspect of the district that Arielys deeply values is the diversity she sees among staff and students.
Growing up in Mannheim Township, she remembers noticing the lack of representation among her own teachers.
“I never had teachers of color growing up,” she said. “That was something I noticed. One of the things I love about the School District of Lancaster is that there are educators from many different cultures. Representation matters. It helps students feel welcomed and represented.”
Outside of the classroom, Arielys enjoys spending time with family and loved ones. She often unwinds by cooking, baking, or catching up on her favorite Netflix shows after a busy day at school.
Baking in particular has become both a creative outlet and a small entrepreneurial venture. Arielys runs a small baking business where she prepares tres leches cakes by order.
“Baking helps me relieve anxiety,” she said. “It’s always comforting to do something you’re good at and something you love.”
Even with her busy schedule, Arielys continues to find joy in the small moments that make the school day memorable. One of her favorite traditions at Milestones is when the gym teacher organizes staff versus student tournaments.
“Every once in a while we have games where the students compete against the adults,” she said. “It’s always such a fun bonding experience for everyone.”
For Arielys, those moments reflect what makes the Milestones community special. Beyond academics, it is a place where relationships are built, confidence grows, and students learn that they have people cheering for them.
Much of Arielys’ drive to show up for her students each day comes from someone who has inspired her throughout her life.
“My mom has always inspired me,” she said. “She went through many struggles in life, but she always worked hard and always showed up. She taught me that as long as I show up for these kids, that’s what matters.”
That commitment to showing up, building trust, and supporting students through every challenge is exactly what makes Arielys Ortiz such an important part of the Milestones team and the School District of Lancaster community.
