Staff Shoutout: Kelly Adams, Elizabeth Esbenshade-Fluck, and Christina “Chrissy” Armstrong – PreK

This week, we are shining the spotlight on three extraordinary educators who play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our youngest learners: Kelly Adams, Elizabeth Esbenshade-Fluck, and Christina Armstrong, our dedicated Pre-K Coaches!

Pre-K is where the foundation of lifelong learning begins. From the moment a family steps into our Pre-K program, these remarkable educators work behind the scenes and on the front lines, ensuring that every child receives a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Their support stretches beyond the classroom, guiding teachers, strengthening family connections, and fostering innovative early learning practices that shape our district’s youngest learners. They help shape the early learning experiences that prepare students for success, ensuring that every child is seen, valued, and encouraged to thrive.

A colleague shared, “Our Pre-K Coaches are dedicated to supporting our entire program, ensuring that the foundation of lifelong learning is established from the moment each family meets our team. The combined level of experience and knowledge these ladies bring is what helps push our team forward each year. Their passion for early learning shines through in every coaching session, professional development presentation, and personal interaction they have. Their commitment to early learning have created an environment where teachers feel supported, families feel valued, and students are set up for success.”

Meet our Pre-K Coaches

Kelly Adams, ELD PreK Coach

With 18 years in the district, including seven as an ELD Pre-K Coach, Kelly plays a crucial role in supporting English Language Development for our youngest learners. But her work goes beyond language acquisition, she ensures that students and families feel welcomed, heard, and empowered to succeed in a new and sometimes unfamiliar environment.

One of Kelly’s greatest passions is working with New American families who are navigating a new school system, a new culture, and sometimes a new language. She takes the time to build personal relationships with parents and caregivers, offering them guidance, advocacy, and practical support. Whether it’s helping a family access healthcare, understand school policies, or ensure their child feels safe in the classroom, Kelly serves as a bridge between home and school.

“My hope is always to help clear at least some of the barriers they face and make sure they know they are not alone,” she shares.

In addition to working with families, Kelly is deeply invested in teacher development, helping educators incorporate best practices for Dual Language Learners and ensuring that Pre-K classrooms are inclusive, engaging, and language-rich environments. She credits the Pre-K team and Dr. Shaun Perez for fostering a culture of learning and growth, where new ideas are embraced, and teachers support one another. “We are often ahead of the curve in instructional strategies, social-emotional learning, dual language support, and family engagement. It’s amazing to be part of a team that is constantly evolving and improving.”

In 2022, Kelly made the decision to become a Single Mother by Choice, a journey that led to the birth of her daughter. “She will be two this year, and she is my greatest adventure and most prized accomplishment,” she says.

Her expertise in working with Dual Language Learners was also recognized nationally this year when she was invited to write a blog for Language Castle, a leading resource for early educators who support multilingual students.

Elizabeth Esbenshade-Fluck, PreK Instructional Coach

With 28 years of experience in education, Elizabeth joined SDoL just over a year ago and in that short time, she has already become an integral part of the Pre-K team. Her ability to connect with educators and students makes her a vital resource for improving instruction and ensuring a high-quality Pre-K experience for all.

Elizabeth believes that coaching is not just about giving advice but about building trust and forming partnerships with teachers. She works closely with Pre-K educators, helping them refine their instructional practices, incorporate new strategies, and create classroom environments that inspire curiosity and joy. “I absolutely love the Pre-K team. As a newcomer, I have felt welcomed and included from the start,” she says.

For Elizabeth, working with four-year-olds is one of the most fulfilling parts of her job. “They are amazing humans who teach me something new every time we are together. They remind me to stay curious, find amazement in the little things, and embrace laughter and friendship.” She sees early childhood education as a magical time, where students are eager to explore, ask questions, and form connections that shape their learning journey for years to come.

Outside of work, Elizabeth has a deep love for travel and has had the rare opportunity to visit Africa twice:

  • In 2019, she traveled to Kenya, a trip that was so moving that she cried upon leaving, unsure if she’d ever return.
  • In 2023, she was fortunate to visit Rwanda, where she was inspired by the country’s beauty, resilience, and rich culture.

“When I left, I cried again. I hope I am lucky enough to go back one day.”

This year, Elizabeth was invited to present to graduate and undergraduate students at Millersville University. Public speaking has always been a challenge for her, but she embraced the experience as a way to grow both personally and professionally. “It was a reminder that we can do hard things,” she says.

Christina (Chrissy) Armstrong, PreK Coach

With 20 years in the district, Chrissy has built a career that is defined by collaboration, innovation, and a deep commitment to student success. She thrives in the ever-changing nature of her role, where no two days are the same.

Chrissy works closely with teachers and classroom staff, helping them develop best practices, create engaging lesson plans, and integrate new instructional methods. She enjoys brainstorming, problem-solving, and ensuring that Pre-K classrooms remain dynamic, student-centered spaces.

“My days are filled with building relationships, exchanging best practices, and planning both student enrichment and family engagement activities,” she says.

One of the things Chrissy values most about SDoL is its commitment to strong relationships with families. She believes that when families are engaged, students feel more confident and supported. She works to ensure that parents and caregivers feel like active partners in their child’s education.

This year, Chrissy has been instrumental in helping to roll out RULER, a social-emotional learning program that supports emotional intelligence in both students and educators. She has focused on developing self-awareness and communication skills not only for young learners but for teachers and staff as well.

Chrissy’s adventurous spirit extends beyond the classroom:

  • She has snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Slid down a waterfall in the Dominican Republic.
  • And even went skydiving for her birthday!

That same curiosity and willingness to take risks is reflected in her approach to education, always seeking new ways to engage students, empower teachers, and build a stronger Pre-K program.
