Supporting and Empowering: Celebrating Social Work Appreciation Month with Kim Nguyen, Lafayette ES

Every day, in every school, social workers serve as an essential bridge between students, families, and the resources they need to thrive. Social Work Appreciation Month is a time to recognize their efforts, acknowledge the challenges they navigate, and celebrate the meaningful impact they make in the lives of students. At the School District of Lancaster, we are proud to highlight the incredible work of Kim Nguyen, a social worker at Lafayette Elementary School.

Finding Purpose in Representation and Advocacy

Kim has been with SDoL for five years, bringing compassion, advocacy, and a deep commitment to her students. Though she grew up in Lancaster, she did not attend SDoL schools. Throughout her education, she often found herself as one of the only Asian students in the classroom. This experience shaped her perspective, making her acutely aware of the importance of representation and belonging in the school environment.

When she began her career search, she was drawn to SDoL’s diverse student body, particularly its strong Vietnamese community. The opportunity to work in a school where she could represent and connect with students who share similar cultural backgrounds was an important factor in her decision.

“One of my favorite moments at work is connecting with my Asian students, sharing conversations about their food, where they shop for groceries, and their culture is something I deeply value,” Kim reflects. “I see many of my students navigating the challenge of preserving their family customs while embracing new cultures here. I enjoy hearing their stories, supporting them, and helping them learn to advocate for themselves, something I wish I had while growing up.”

Building Meaningful Relationships

Kim’s work is rooted in relationship-building. She understands that social work is not just about addressing crises; it’s about creating a safe and supportive space where students feel seen and heard.

Whether she is assisting a student in finding the confidence to speak up in class, helping a family access critical resources, or simply being a trusted adult who listens without judgment, Kim’s presence at Lafayette Elementary makes a lasting difference.

She takes pride in advocating for students and families who may feel unheard, ensuring they have access to the tools and opportunities they need to succeed.

The Motivation Behind Her Work

For Kim, social work is a purpose. Every day, she is motivated by the students she serves, knowing that her work plays a role in their journey toward success. She looks forward to the day when she can watch them cross the graduation stage, knowing that she played a small part in their story.

“Seeing my students is what motivates me every day. I enjoy working with them, supporting them, and celebrating their successes. I want them to succeed, and I can’t wait to see them graduate,” Kim shares.

Balancing Personal Well-Being

Outside of school, Kim prioritizes her well-being by spending time with friends and family, reading, enjoying good food, and lifting heavy weights, a passion that speaks to her strength both in and out of the workplace.

Self-care is essential in a field as emotionally demanding as social work, and Kim understands the importance of balancing her personal and professional life to continue showing up for her students with the same energy and dedication.

“Being a social worker means supporting and empowering others as they navigate challenges in their lives. It means advocating for those who may not have a voice, fostering connections, and providing resources to help individuals and families thrive,” Kim explains. “For me, it’s also about building meaningful relationships, understanding diverse experiences, and guiding others to recognize their own strengths and potential.”

The Community’s Role in Supporting Social Workers

The role of a school social worker is complex and often emotionally demanding. Social Work Appreciation Month serves as a reminder of the vital role these professionals play in shaping the future of our students. It is a time to reflect on the importance of advocacy, the emotional labor involved, and the support necessary to continue this crucial work.

When asked how the community can better support school social workers, Kim emphasizes the importance of recognizing the challenges students face and the essential role social workers play in addressing those needs.

Increased access to resources, mental health services, and professional development can enhance the support provided to students and families. Additionally, fostering open communication and collaboration between social workers, educators, families, and the broader community can create a stronger, more inclusive environment where every student feels seen and supported.

Acknowledging the Professional Identity of Social Workers

Kim also values the district’s recognition of her profession. Previously, social workers in the district were known as Student and Family Resource Specialists (SFRS), a title that, while descriptive, did not fully reflect their role. When SDoL transitioned to using the title of Social Worker, it was a significant moment for Kim and her colleagues.

“I didn’t get my master’s degree in Student Family Resource Specialist, I got a Master of Social Work,” Kim says. The name change acknowledged the professional expertise of social workers and the specialized training they undergo to support students and families effectively.

Honoring Social Workers During Appreciation Month

Kim’s dedication to her students and her role within SDoL is not just about addressing immediate needs, it’s about shaping a future where every student feels empowered to succeed. As we celebrate Social Work Appreciation Month, we honor Kim and all the social workers who make a difference every day. Their impact extends far beyond the walls of our schools, shaping lives and communities for years to come.
