SWE Update February 18 2022

Message from Principal Martz

It was great to have a full week of teaching and learning.  Students have been working hard on Black History Month projects as well as learning about our name sake, Dr. Rita Smith-Wade-El.  Stay tuned for pictures.  Just a friendly reminder that we do not have school on Monday and an early dismissal on Wednesday.  I hope everyone has a wonderful three day weekend!

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns.

SDOL to host series of town hall meetings on equity policy, outcomes

Members of the School District of Lancaster community are invited to weigh in as the district drafts an equity policy and determines key measures of equity to monitor in future years.

The district is hosting a series of town hall meetings in February:

February 16 @ 6:00 p.m., Washington Elementary

February 23 @ 6:00 p.m., McCaskey East

February 26 @ 10:00 a.m., Reynolds MS

February 26 @ 3:00 p.m., Lafayette Elementary

Families, students, staff and members of the community are invited to attend any meeting.

Superintendent Dr. Damaris Rau and members of the district’s equity steering committee will present on the district’s equity work to date. From there, attendees will break into smaller groups to review and discuss a draft of the district’s equity policy and key metrics for the district to track.

The equity policy, which will ultimately be adopted by the school board and govern district operations, defines equity as “the fair and just allocation of resources, opportunities and treatment of students based upon each individual student’s needs.”

Members of the community can also provide input on this work through an online opinion sharing portal, ThoughtExchange.

CDC Guidelines Update

The school board and administration are following the possibility that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will provide updated guidance on COVID mitigation for schools. At this time, our health and safety plan commits the district to following CDC recommendations, including universal masking in schools. We do not intend to relax our current mitigation guidelines overnight. We will first convene with the school board to consider any updated recommendations and announce any changes to you and our families in advance of their taking effect.  The board meets the first three Tuesdays of each month.
