SWE Update March 25, 2022

Message from Principal Martz

Good Afternoon SWE Parents and Families,

We had a great week of teaching and learning!  It’s hard to believe the 4th marking period started today.

Today we say good-bye to Ms. Samantha Nocheck, who was offered a wonderful new opportunity with another company.  We wish her the best, but we know we will still see her around.  Thank you Ms. Nocheck for everything you have done for us here at SWE.  You will be missed!

Thank you so much for making us aware that Tom has not been at his post this week at 5th and West End Avenue.  He was on vacation.  Please know there is no one available to back fill a vacant crossing guard when they take vacation, or call out sick.  The crossing guards that cover Lancaster Twp. are contracted by Lancaster Township through The Crossing Guard Company, which is based in California.  They currently do not have any extra crossing guards in reserve to fill vacant spots like we would with a substitute teacher.  We have a pretty severe crossing guard shortage across the district.  Everyone has been struggling to find candidates to fill these positions.  Lancaster City Police has the ability to shift personnel around to assist in covering intersection when there is a vacancy, because their crossing guards are Lancaster City PD employees, and they are still down six positions.  Since Lancaster Township crossing guards are privately contracted, the Township does not have personnel to fill the gaps.

Mr. Gabryluk, Coordinator of School and Community Safety, asked to be given advance notice of when a crossing guard is going to be off so that we can notify families.  This way each family can make a decision to either walk their child to school, or drive them if they feel it is unsafe for them to cross that intersection without a crossing guard.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

RACE FOR EDUCATION
Friday, April 29, 2022

It is time to get ready for the Race for Education!

The Race for Education is a fun event for the whole school – each class will have the chance to run, walk, or jog around the Wheatland track, listen to music, and enjoy a popsicle treat at the end of the Race! This event will also be livestreamed so our friends and families can participate, too! We need your help to raise money for our school by asking family, friends, and neighbors to “sponsor” your race. You can also win prizes for the donations received in your name!

SWE Families – We need your help!

Please help us spread the word! Here are some suggestions:
1) Post the Race for Education on Social Media with a link to the fundraising site: https://fundrazr.com/SWErace_for_education
2) Reach out to friends and family! Help your child write letters or send emails asking for sponsorships.
Dear __________,
On Friday, April 29, 2022, I will be participating in the Smith-Wade-El Elementary Race for Education. This event helps our school raise money for field trips, educational assemblies, and fun community events like Bingo night and the Spring Family Dance! Will you sponsor me? Please use this link to make a donation in my name: https://fundrazr.com/SWErace_for_education
Thank you for supporting me and my classmates!
Sincerely, (Student name, teacher & grade)
3) Talk to your neighbors! Ask them if they will help support our local neighborhood school!
