SWE Weekly Update – May 20

Message from Principal Martz

Good Afternoon SWE Families~

You can tell spring has sprung as it was another busy week at Smith-Wade-El!  Our entire school enjoyed traveling to the high school (and to outer space) to watch an entertaining and interactive play at McCaskey on Thursday morning.  This was followed up by a wonderful evening of song and music by our 4th and 5th grade students. A big shout out to Mrs. May for all her hard work in preparing our students for the Spring Concert. Tonight, we will host the Primary Spring Showcase at 5:15 p.m. followed by our Spring Celebration in the gym beginning at 6:00 p.m. We hope all families can join us for this family dance and as always please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Have a wonderful weekend!

New Principals

Please join me in welcoming our newest principals. These principals underwent a rigorous hiring process, and we are proud they chose to lead here in SDoL. Thank you to everyone who participated in the process.

  • Ms. Abigail Lavery will serve as the new principal at Wickersham Elementary.  She has spent her entire career in the School District of Lancaster, joining the district in 2009 as a social studies teacher at then-Hand (now Jackson) Middle School, where she taught for nine years. She is currently interim principal at Washington Elementary, though she served for the past two school years as assistant principal at Wheatland Middle School.
  • Ms. Amy Martz will continue to serve as principal at Smith-Wade-El Elementary. She has served as interim principal at SWE since November. She came to SWE from McCaskey High School, where she was associate principal and before that assistant principal since 2016.
  • Ms. Jennifer Pahl will serve as principal at King Elementary. She is currently an assistant principal at William Penn High School in York. She began her career in the York City School District as a second grade teacher in the Spanish Immersion Program at Devers Elementary. She also taught as a Tier III intervention teacher for five years.

Approval of Equity Policy

After years of researching, planning, and writing, I am proud to share our district Equity Policy was approved at this week’s board meeting. Thank you to our entire District Equity Steering Committee for your input and commitment to developing this important district policy. In addition, the district’s Equity Report Card will be shared upon completion.

Mental Health Month

Mental Health Awareness Month is a great time to update your emergency resources. 988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. While some areas may be currently able to connect to the Lifeline by dialing 988, this dialing code will be available to everyone across the United States starting on July 16, 2022.
