The future of Lancaster starts here! Join us at the 2nd Annual STEM Fair on May 22

At SDoL, we believe our students are more than just learners, they are changemakers, problem-solvers, and future leaders. That’s why we’re proud to invite you to the 2nd Annual Environmental STEM Fair, held on May 22, 2025, at the McCaskey East Gymnasium.

From 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., the gym will transform into a hub of innovation and community partnership as students from across the district present their research and solutions to some of Lancaster City’s most urgent environmental challenges.

This year’s theme, “Environmental Issues Facing Lancaster City”, asks students to dive deep into real-world problems that affect the health and well-being of our neighborhoods. Topics range from PFAS contamination in our water supply and poor air quality to lead poisoning from everyday products. These are not abstract concerns, they are issues that many Lancaster residents face daily and our students are stepping up to tackle them head-on.

In partnership with Mayor Danene Sorace and the City of Lancaster, this initiative empowers students to explore how science, technology, engineering, and math can be used not just to understand these problems, but to solve them. Whether it’s designing a new water filtration system, proposing policy changes, or developing sustainable alternatives to harmful products, our students are encouraged to think boldly and act locally.

“The STEM Fair is a platform for students to explore environmental issues that impact their lives and our community,” says Jennifer Cleary, Assistant Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (STEM). “Through this process, they will develop practical solutions, gain valuable skills, and show us just how innovative they can be.”

We invite families, community members, educators, and local organizations to walk alongside our students in their learning journey. Your presence matters. It’s a reminder to each participant that their ideas are valued, their voices are heard, and their work has the power to make a difference.

We hope you’ll join us in celebrating student ingenuity, environmental stewardship, and the potential for education to transform communities!
