The heart of education: honoring our teachers | Teacher Appreciation Week with Dr. April Hershey

Every year, Teacher Appreciation Week gives us a special moment to reflect on something we see in action every day: the incredible commitment of our teachers. In the School District of Lancaster, our teachers build trust, nurture growth, and create spaces where every student feels they belong. Their impact reaches well beyond the classroom, shaping not only minds but also confidence, character, and hope for the future.

For me, this week is especially personal. As a young girl, I always found school to be the place I felt most comfortable. This was thanks to the amazing and caring teachers who imparted their knowledge and care to my classmates and me each and every day. These were the people who made school feel like home, a place where I was supported and encouraged to grow. Bitten by the music bug in 4th grade, I developed lifelong friendships with my music educators, who motivated me in so many meaningful ways. It was in those classrooms and during performances where I learned the value of teamwork, collaboration, and finding deeper meaning through the arts. My teachers showed me that beauty can be found in every person and every moment, and their guidance left a lasting impression on my heart.

Today, as I think about my own teachers and the amazing educators I work alongside here in SDoL, I am filled with gratitude. Our teachers face challenges head-on and continue to show up for their students with dedication, creativity, and care. They design lessons that spark curiosity, they encourage students to push past obstacles, and they show every child that they matter.

Whether it’s a kind word on a hard day, an after-school tutoring session, or a moment of celebrating a student’s success, these everyday actions add up to something truly life-changing. I am indebted to all of my teachers, all of my teaching colleagues, and all those teachers who inspire and uplift every child every day.

THANK YOU for your energy, your heart, and your commitment to helping every student reach their full potential. You are the heart of our district and the foundation for every success our students achieve.

On behalf of the entire SDoL community, I wish each of you a wonderful and well-deserved Teacher Appreciation Week. Please know that your work is valued, your impact is real, and your care is felt in ways that words can never fully express.
